After 25 excruciating months on Cell C, my switch to prepaid happens somewhere between 25/05 and 28/05. I am going to MTN prepaid for a while.

Is the port procedure simple enough to do at home or should I play it safe and go to an MTN store and let them assist me? I have never ported a prepaid number and don't want to risk losing the number as it is business critical.

Also, can one port the same day that Cell C switches the number to prepaid or should I wait 24hrs?

To port to MTN just pick up a MTN sim. Rica is and sms the sim number to 0837678287 and you are done. You just put the MTN sim in and activate it once you lose signal on your Cellc prepaid sim.

Just like that. I suggest getting a prepaid LTE sim from Checkers,Shoprite or a MTN store if you have a LTE device. Always nice to have in case the 3G could be congested.

For those that have converted a contract to prepaid - when does it happen? Is it like porting where it happens overnight or can the minutes and data disappear at any time during the day?

Will one be notified? I just don't want to be driving in the sticks and suddenly have no minutes and zero airtime.

I converted a topup contract to prepaid. They cancel it on the day you requested. Mine took place 6pm at night when I just got a SMS saying Welcome to 99c For Real........

When I checked all my minutes and data was gone.

Why MTN ? they are bad with data.. mine jumps from 3g to Edge all the time just about anywhere in EL. Vodacom has got LTE in EL , MTN does not.

Thanks cavedog! My month's notice ends on 28/05 but Autopage said it would happen anytime from 25/05.

Have had an Afrihost sim in a mifi in my car for a month and it has been good all over EL, except for Haven Hills when I was there to see a client. I have it locked onto 3G all the time. Also, our family beach house at Marshstrand/ Haga Haga has 10mb+ MTN 3G but only EDGE Vodacom.

Lastly, Vodacom and Cell C are very saturated in Gonubie during peak times. MTN still flies.

Ah ok, yes when I stayed in Gonubie it was good. Here in Beacon Bay it's bad. But MTN has got better reception in remote places, even Hogsback.

I envy you, my switch-over only happens near the end of next month, though Cell C phoned me today and promised they would fixed their entire Western Cape network. I should have switched over to prepaid sooner, wasn't aware of the 1 month notice period when out of contract..

Still waiting for the SMS to say I am free........ Bloody Autopage are probably going to keep their claws in me right up to the very end!

I am still getting billed 3 months later after porting my Vodacom contract to a Vodacom Shop rather than Autopage...

Best of all... The are both billing me :). Waiting for feedback that I should get this week (phoned last week)

It is up to the client to cancel their contract with their ex SP. Only the account holder may do this.

We did cancel with our ex SP and the changeover was done...

Autopage can't explain why they are billing us. Waiting for a refund now :)

Something in my port cocked up, and failed :( Now I'm cellphoneless.
Telkom helpdesk mumbled something about the people who I did the request through should have asked for my cell c account number.

Just an update that I converted to prepaid yesterday morning and last night ported to Vodacom. For the last month I was heading for MTN without giving Voda a second thought, but with these strikes and a lack of 808 support, I decided Voda is a safer bet to port to and I needed to get off Cell C without delay.

Vodacom has some nice features which were on mtn and cell c first. check *123# and *111# for their daily and overnight data bundles. R12 for a whole gig afaik. welcome to prepaid. welcome the free world!

So I'm now in an area with iffy telkom coverage.
With cell crap that would mean roaming on vodacom on edge, which is ironically better than cell crap hspa.
But now, I get
