Hey,

I've tried Googling for the answer to my strange predicament but I can find nothing.

Basically, what's happening is that when I click on certain weblinks, the Microsoft Office 2000 setup executes! The disc is not in the drive and it's not a mounted image etc.

They seem to be completely random weblinks and sometimes are not repeatable.

This started happening a while ago with my old outlook express. Whenever I single clicked on a new message to highlight it, it would run the MS Office 2000 setup for some strange reason. I upgraded to Outlook 2007 and that seemed to be the end of it.

Now, all of a sardine, the problem is back and I'm at a total loss here.

Not sure at all just throwing ideas out there but could it possibly be an internet virus? You know the kind that is harmless but annoying as well.I had a problem once ,everytime i went to google my mouse pointer starts doing its own thing and closes everything i had opened ,it was as if someone was remotely controlling my mouse ,i did a virus scan and picked up some tracking cookies and 2 trojans after i cleaned it i no longer had the problem.

I have heard of this before. I remember either having this problem or hearing about it from a friend. Turned out there was some component of office which affects web services which didn't get installed properly or somehow got un-installed.

1) Do a complete uninstall and re-install of Office.
2) I would also grab Autopatcher for XP/Vista and the AutoPatcher for Office, and make sure my system is completely up to date with all the patches and add-ons.

If all else fails, you might need to do a complete system re-install... but let us do some googling first before it comes to that.

You could also try a registry cleaner such as Ccleaner or Wise Registry Cleaner. Might help, not sure though :)

I've had a similar problem a while ago, Do an uninstall of Office and and re-install, In the re-instal,l choose custom install and install everything to the Hard drive (nothing should be run of the CD or installed when needed) this should solve the problem. Otherwise its some form of virus.

Possibly those weblinks were created with newer versions of MS Office and now when you try and access it with your MS Office it is launching the setup process to install missing features. I suggest you do what Nishalin suggested.

I had the same problem. I all started once I installed Frontpage with the MS Office Package... Don't know why though. But with a fresh install you might be good.

Good luck!

:p

My wording was intentional! I tend to say things like "all of a sardine" when I'm really frustrated and can't swear! :D

I still think that I've seen weirder problems regarding Office...
(Title proclaims the weirdest problem...)
