Just and update and an omission for this article regarding VirtualBox

Since the latest Version 4 you can also download and install the Virtual Box extention pack. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads This adds full USB2 support and I used it to build my Linux machine. This is now free, where it used to be only for the proprietry version in Version 3 and below.
