The worst-case scenario for the DA

The DA's extreme left wing stance has not helped in much over the years, personally I am finding it more and more difficult to continue supporting a party which it seems cannot bring anything to the table or succeed where other parties fail. Dodgy dealing in the inner circle never works in favour of a party and Steenhuizen has been a massive failure for them. They also need to have a very serious look at anyone Steenhuizen has appointed or brought into the party, there are currently a lot of people with question marks over their heads.

Fsck me but politics has become hyperbolic.

Stalin was extreme left. Mao was extreme left.

The DA is somewhere left of centre sure, but they're not even close to extreme. There's a lot of left still to go there.

Da is in bed with the European extreme left, they need to accept the label.

If the DA is the extreme left what was Mao? Go on, tell me. Do we need a new category now beyond left?

If the DA is the extreme of the left someone like Charlie Kirk was basically extreme right super-Hitler. I don't even know what Hitler himself was... ultra-turbo-mega right with bells on?. None of it makes any sense.

You strike me as an older fellow. Weren't you alive to experience basically first hand what actual communism (the REAL extreme left) looks like? How can you have lived through something like that, then look at the DA and go "oh yea... extreme left"?

They don't call for seizing the means of production, elimination of classes or any of the usual extreme left stuff.

Left sure, but extreme? Come off it.

I think the DA is in for a big surprise in this years local elections in Cape Town. They've managed to piss off everyone from the very poor to the ultra rich, nobody I've spoken to is happy with how they are running Cape Town. Working traffic lights and pot-hole free roads can only get you so far.

100%

Its even being accused of being right wing... so I don't think its honest to call them extreme left at all.

Centre left. Maybe a bit beyond that in recent years. Extreme? Not even close.

The entire concept of left-wing and right-wing in the era of Trump has become warped. No matter how nuanced your political views may be, you'll either be accused of being a radical leftist or a right-wing nazi with very little space left between those positions for normal reasonable political views.

I think its not even that anymore.

You are left-wing or right-wing based on a single stance rather than a holistic view.
But the concepts of left-wing/right-wing have not been warped, they are just used incorrectly by people who don't understand them or who are using them to score points for "their" side.

It was warped long before Trump. Largely by Americans. It's become so stupidly polarised on individual issues at this point that now people think something as milk-toast as the DA is extreme.

Extreme left is communism. Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot. The DA are weedy squibs compared to those genuine monsters. The DA is busy auctioning off government land in Cape Town to the private sector. OMG THE EXTREME LEFT!!!

Extreme right is fascism. Hitler, Mussolini. Trump is a flabby orange poser compared to those genuine monsters.

That's what they said with the last election, the DA actually increased their position in the WC. Truth is that there is no one even remotely close to delivering the level of quality the DA is delivering.

People forget that it's perfectly possible to be to the left on certain issues and to the right on other issues. Many people have very liberal views on social issues but very conservative views on economic issues, or vice versa. And people change their views as they get older. Some people become more conservative, other people become more liberal.

Maybe, but things feel different this time around. The whole rates debacle has shifted things. And when the property valuation roll is released in a few days time and everyone realises they are going to be screwed even harder on rates there is going to be an even bigger storm brewing.

Don't come here and criticise DA BAD!! We must look for first world problems in a third world country, to show off our intelligence. To hell with who the best governance option is among the current crop. Let's fragment the vote further so that the rest of the country can look and work like Joburg. Cape Town looks too nice for their own good and must be humbled...

The democrats made the rules. Now everyone plays by them

It's funny watching them currently scramble and pretend they are centre left when they've been behaving like loony lefty retards for ages. Barack and Hillary are now back to preaching borders and immigration control

I think we've also been living in a world of relatively (to our past anyway) centre-aligned governments for so long that people have forgotten how far these left and right ideologies can actually go.

We haven't seen a major political player do proper communism or fascism in what... 40 years? More?

No brother. Even in the 50s anyone who mentioned something as milk-toast as socialised medicine in the US, or even suggested maybe they shouldn't have to sell their kidney to get the other one treatment, was called a pinko.

It's only in recent memory that we recall all the lefties calling everybody who didn't want to recognise 83 genders "Literally Hitler".

This nonsense is coming from both sides and has been for bloody ages. It just gets worse and worse with every presidential term.

Again, while there are certainly some pretty left positions coming out of the democrats, they're not commies. They're not Stalin. Very few, if any of them, are calling for these extremist left policies like seizing the means of production. Same with the republicans. They're not fascists by any stretch of the imagination.
