Cape Town - South Africans abroad trying to access an IEC form that will allow them to vote are still met with the previous form designed for those temporarily abroad, News24 found on Tuesday.

This despite the Constitutional Court ruling on Thursday that all registered voters living overseas can vote for National Assembly representation on April 22, provided they fill in the form.

With the deadline for notifying the commission via the form set at March 27, time is fast running out and legal experts fear that the outdated form may deter some from taking part in the special vote.

The VEC10 form, in accordance with previous limited categories, asks prospective voters to state the purpose of their "temporary absence" as well as their planned date of return and permanent address in South Africa.

But the IEC told News24 that the current form will have to make do as "it is too late to change the form now".

"Anybody who now qualifies could just use the same form and the same format and just change it to suit their needs," IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said. "It's just a bit too late now. It was put up before the court ruling."

How long does it take to redesign a form ??
