The Xperia X1 Thread

I want to get a good navigation system for my X1, and assuming on past posts is the Garmin mobile XP a good one to have?? Piesang have you tried out the a-GPS yet??

I am completely clueless to navigation software and how it works?? So any help will be greatly appreciated!!

If it is anything like all the other phones with A-GPS then the A part means assisted. All this does is allows the phones GPS receiver to lock onto the satellites quicker by connecting to the network for assistance. Once you are locked on you no longer send and received data from the network but use the satellites you are locked onto.

Well that is my laymen understanding of it anyway. I have heard two conflicting reports about what data it uses. One states that it uses the towers to more or less get your location and then uses that to help pick up the best satellites. Another report states that it checks to see what satellites are above the horizon relative to your position and therefore prevents the need for the receiver to search for all satellites but rather just those that are in "sight"

For navigation Garmin XT Mobile is the best(maps are mostly up to date), Google maps are no good for navigation but the satelite view is very cool.

Garmin XT does not use A-GPS and doesn't need it with the excellent sat reception you get on the X1. Google maps uses A-Gps for fast location and it is quick but there is also an option to use GPS. It will still make a connection to the internet to download map data and map images ala google earth.

A professional description of A-GPS is given here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS_Phone

Assisted GPS

Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, enhances the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.[1]

[edit] Description

Conventional GPS has difficulty providing reliable positions in poor signal conditions. For example when surrounded by tall buildings (resulting in multipath), or when the satellite signals are weakened when a GPS device is indoors or under trees. Some newer receivers are better at handling these situations.

In addition, when first turned on in these conditions, some non-assisted GPS units may not be able to download the almanac and ephemeris information from the GPS satellites, rendering them unable to function until a clear signal can be received continuously for up to one minute.

An A-GPS receiver can address these problems in several ways, using an assistance server:

* The assistance server can locate the phone roughly by which cell site it is connected to on the cellular network.
* The assistance server has a good satellite signal, and lots of computation power, so it can compare fragmentary signals relayed to it by cell phones, with the satellite signal it receives directly, and then inform the cell phone or emergency services of the cell phone's position.
* It can supply orbital data for the GPS satellites to the cell phone, enabling the cell phone to lock to the satellites when it otherwise could not, and autonomously calculate its position.
* Simply capturing a brief snapshot of the GPS signal, with approximate time, for the server to later process into a position.[2]
* By having accurate, surveyed coordinates for the cell site towers, it can have better knowledge of ionospheric conditions and other errors affecting the GPS signal than the cell phone alone, enabling more precise calculation of position. (See also Wide Area Augmentation System)

As an additional benefit, it can reduce both the amount of CPU and programming required for a GPS phone by offloading most of the work onto the assistance server. (This is not a large amount for a basic GPS – many early GPSs utilized Intel 80386-class 16MHz CPUs or similar hardware.)

A typical A-GPS-enabled cell phone will use a data connection (internet, or other) to contact the assistance server. Alternatively, it may use standard non-assisted GPS, which is slower and less accurate, but does not lead to network charges for data traffic, which can be considerable.[3] Some A-GPS solutions do not have the option of falling back to conventional GPS (as with the new iPhone 3G).

High Sensitivity GPS is an allied technology that addresses some of the same issues in a way that does not require additional infrastructure. However, unlike some forms of A-GPS, high sensitivity GPS cannot provide instant fixes when the phone has been off for some time.

Um, Steve.... that links to exactly the same article I provided a link for.... take it that means you didn't actually read it...

That the article actually states that both reports that I refer to are indeed correct as A-GPS uses both those methods.

I am not sure about your assertion about Garmin XT not using A-GPS is correct though (in fact I know it is wrong but I am not in the mood to be so assertive!). It is the phone/receiver that uses A-GPS and not the software.

Thanks guys it is all making sense now... i will trust your superior knowledge on this matter and going to go Cape Union market and buy the mobile XT and get the maps.

Just out of interst... once i have the garmin mobile XT all i do is load on to my current SD card and load the Maps... or is this too simple?? The incrdible Rip-off here by me has the garmin maps for southern africa for R100. How much is the Mobile XT gonna set me back!!

Again thanks!!

Mine was sealed as well. I opened it when I got home.

So far the phone haven't froze again so the problem is definitely Touchflo3D.

I didn't notice any problem with the size of Touchflo3D, mine was a perfect fit.

How is the sound quality and volume of your loud speaker?

Went and got another Full HD manilla cab from XDA developers and it runs smoothly and fits perfectly.

guys, please don't screw around with Garmin Mobile.

Just get TomTom Nav7 & the new SA Maps.

by far the best

I'd also like some info on the pricing involved please ;)

Check here guys just noticed on my X1 that the metal finish close to where you lift the cover of the battery is lifting and just took my X1 back to MTN kenilworth and they gonna ship it off somewhere for it to be inspected. It is only just 24hrs old and I have only opened the battery cover a couple of times because the phone froze!!!

So i hope they dont chune me that i did that because no phone costing as much the X1 costs should do this so soon, arent i covered by that 7 days thing????!!

Do you guys reakon they gonna say the freezing of the device could be because i installed touch flo 3D on it and it is not a trusted CAB.... but funny enough my X1 never froze on that panel... the Dam Facebook panel while using Wifi gave me all the problems??

Pissed off now because waited so long for the dam thing and now have to wait for what they say and then join the back of the line for a replacement, if they give me one!!!

i am bummed but anyways so is life... but still an awesome device!!

I'm on my 3rd X1. The 1st one froze about 7 times yesterday. I took it back this morning and got a new one. Opened it in store and that unit was damaged. OBF. They gave me another one. Opened it in store and it is still working perfectly since this morning. No freezes, no problems. I haven't installed the Manilla HD TF3D. Will try it later. I think that the freeze problem is with that. Will confirm later.

So they gave you no trouble about why it was freezing because mine has been sent off before i can get a replacement??

Let us know if TF3D is the cause.

They were supposed to give you a new sealed unit if it's within 7 days. If you want another brand they must give it to you also.

It was within one day but said must be sent off first and plus to put the cherry on top there is no more stock at the store!!!

Will phone them 2mow and fight with them, cause i said dont i get the 7 day thing and she said yes but you must ID the problem with the 7days and then they confirm that it is indeed a manufacturing fault.
