Okay, now that you have read the article arent you also asking why we dont have a 1.5Mbps minimum speed? I mean, does Telkom use second hand equipment that the supposed 1st world countries are finished using? Or are they only using the medium speed channel?

Now I only skimmed the article/tutorial but I am guessing that Telkom is pulling another fast one here. So we officially have the most expensive and slowest ADSL in the entire world.

It really is a beautiful country and just makes you want to send an instant message via dialup to your overseas friends with the slogan "Proudly South African"

BTW when is this much talked about adjustment in ADSL going to take place (introduction of [more expensive] packages for [power] users)?

If they dont increase the cap slightly and reduce ping times while also providing a stable speed then I dont think I will be purchasing ADSL soon. Rather wait for WiFi to take off since the SNO will NOT be cheap. Look at MTN and CELL C. The competitive notion is an illusion. Thats just a nice excuse. Anyways, I know its another moan but I do think we should at least have the minimum 1.5Mbps in South Africa.

I think this is fairly well known - that the 512kbps is not a technical limit but a policy one. My router reports that the line is capable of higher speeds (can't check exact number now, using bloody dial-up because of apparent national authentication difficulties. Remains to be seen whether it clears up).

It does stand to reason - if Telkom are genuinely having trouble servicing the upstream bandwidth demands of ADSL users at 512/256 it doesn't make sense for them to up our CPE <-> DSLAM bandwidth.
