Hello Gamos.

I dont think it's necessary to go to the extreme and leave MyADSL.
But I do see a few posts that are very defammatory. I do beleive these people are just venting their frustrations and MyADSL has become a place to do so. Im sure the founders eyes must raise when he sees some postings and feels sometimes the urge to delete some repetitive comments. But consider all new people entering these forums that want to vent their frustrations aswell.

You tell me where else can I go to speakout my feelings about Telkom's policies and my ADSL connection, but here. I personally thank the founders of MyADSl for setting up this forum for us. You will always get a few rotten apples here as elsewhere in life. Its a fact of life that noone can change. But their opinions are also valid, just like yours.

On a lighter note.
Here is post of a fellow on Madonion that arrived home to findout that his ISP has upgraded his ADSL Connection for free. [:)]

BTTB is right. I think most users come to this website for two reasons:

1. They are frustrated.
Each new member wants to vent his frustration and that creates a lot of new threads mainly dissing Telkom. It's understandable and in this board's spirit of welcoming everyone's opionion, it's something we have to accept.

2. They need to find info on ADSL/MyWireless.
I joined this board before ordering ADSL for our company. As a result of the info I gathered here, I knew exactly how long the waiting period is, which routers to buy and which to avoid, how to set it up on a lan, which ISP offer good customer supprt etc..
From reading the MyWireless topics I also now know that their ordering process is currently flawed, that I will need to sign a 24 month contract, how I need to deal with their customer support. The list goes on. I can make informed decisions based on the info I find here.

You have to take the good with the not so good. [:)]

can't we just get back to the days when you had an internet connection to surf your porn and thats it? *sigh*

Dear Gamos

I read your post and find it a bit troubling that you do not seem to see the bigger picture. I would like you to please reply to this message in order to correct me where and when I make a wrong assumption about your thinking. The mistake I think you are making is in thinking that Telkom has no major impact on SA. If you fail to understand the unnecessary hampering impact that Telkom does have on the possible growth of the country, then I can understand why you fail to comprehend why people are so upset and sometimes militant with regard to Telkom. Telkom defies logic with its sometimes willful disregard of the common good of all the people in South Africa. For a modern economy to be competetive you need competitive and affordable (good) communication to facilitate the economy. Think of it as the grease that makes business and society function more smoothly. I get angry when I think of the multitude of business men and women who had to put business on hold or even end up not starting the business at all due to long waiting periods for Telkom installations. I cringe at the thought of waiting more than 2 years for a residential phone line. Yes, it does happen!

You want to play nice with a company that will not return the favor. I praise Telkom when they give me good service and get heavily upset when they don’t. My biggest problem however is not only the shoddy service, but the high prices! Telkom increases pricing in a climate where the world is actually bringing down the cost of Internet and telecommunication cost. In other words, the world is moving farther and farther ahead of us and we are willingly accepting the growing distance between us and the world. This is literally a huge digital divide caused by Telkom. A divide between those with cheap affordable quality access to communication technology and those who pay a premium for a not so premium service. They use their technology to make more money and we pay more just to communicate less…

How can you say that it is too much to ask that Telkom be removed from the PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN register? How can you say that this forum has become a “nest of disinformation and scheming”? Prove it! Scheming I am willing to admit to. If you call planning to bring a monopoly holding South Africa at ransom to account, scheming, then yes I am a schemer!

Turn around the argument and apply exactly what you said about this forum to Telkom and see if that fits better. Scheming and disinformation… Now there is a thought! [:D]

Gamos - after that lengthy read, what in your wisdom can be done about Telkom?

You seem to have the answers... pray tell. Quiet diplomacy? Constructive criticism? Suggestions? Letters to Sizwe? NONE of that has accomplished anything, that's why we are coming up with ideas. What are yours??

BTW I am not a bad apple, just a normal guy like anyone else, it's just I don't keep my mouth shut and submit to rubbish products and services. I come up with IDEAS. If you don't like my idea's that's too bad because many other people here do. If yoI won't burn down Telkom exchanges, I won't pull their lines out the ground - I want them to wake up and see how they're screwing up this country, that's all.

I can't see why 1) having Telkom taken off the PSA list is oh-so-bad, 2) why you think that more people showing interest on point 1 than passwords is oh-so-bad, and 3) my comment about the 1000 ADSL users is oh-so-bad?

I have been waiting for ADSL since 2000, now we have it, and it's not good enough. I hope ytou're not angry with my Anti-Telkom T-shirts...! Sure, there is Telkom bashing here and there, so what? It just shows the level of frustration experienced by most people. Within the next month you will thank me for the effort I have put in behind this forum - we are going to see results very soon.

I agree with Antowan.

On any forum you will find "flaming". I have seen this many times before on other forums. Everyone believes their view to be the right one. It's normal. Repetitive posts are normally avoided by "Sticky's". But you find people dont read the sticky's and want to give their 2c worth. Commonly flaming Telkom or someone else in the process. This phenomena is not specific to MyADSL, but is very common. Normally those posters either leave as quick as they came or the Admin's sort them out. And BTW, you might find in some cases that its some 12 year old freckled faced spoilt kid sitting at home bored with nothing else better to do.
I wouldnt take much notice of these posters. AS I said they come and go. But you seem to have a greater mind than them and Im sure the people here will appreciate your input as your concerns are valid.

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Once again I state that I appreciate this initiative and support alot of users here, but the one rotten apple, spoils the bunch...<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
The one rotten apple in this case is Telkom. If it wasnt for them, I wouldnt be posting here.

Good day Gamos

The right to protest is protected by our constitution. Do you seriously think the status quo will change if people are complacent and simply sit around? Yes, I agree, the ICASA trip is definitely a good one and kudos to RPM for going the extra mile in getting that out there. No monopoly on earth has every relinquished their “power” willingly. You seem to regard Telkom as some cute and cuddly little teddy bear. It is a behemoth of an organization that has become too big and cumbersome (true to the nature of monopolies) for even the people in charge to effectively control. [V]

It is a monster. If you had one person to talk to who could make a difference it would be nice, but reality bites. Telkom doesn’t have to listen to its customers. Nobody can hold it accountable (apart from a willing ICASA) for anything by switching brands. Why? Because there is no choice. We have to fight Telkom. And frankly you argument and rants against people who leave for other countries in search of better infrastructure is distasteful! Who are you to decide what people should do and why? Every person on the face of this planet has only one life. A mere 80 years on this earth if you are lucky! Why should you willingly sacrifice your life for a country where people are blatantly unwilling to move forward? I am a citizen of the world! I can go wherever I want and whenever I want for whichever reason I think appropriate! I will have no problem packing my bags and leaving as soon as it becomes clear to me that the situation cannot change. I have not reached that stage yet, but you are not helping! Telkom must love customers like you. Please note that I dislike your ideologies and not you as a person. Maybe we can find common ground on other issues, but this is just too strange for words.[?] I don’t know where it came from…[:D]

I have never said let's mail-bomb Telkom, what do you take me for, a script-kiddie? My ideas have been the Telkom shirts and the ProudlySA list and the Competition Commission. So sue me. All legal ways (seeing you are so concerned about <u>criminal</u> elements) of bringing about some kind of reaction at the very least from the one company which is screwing this country every second of the day.

As you said - if you don't have anything constructive to say - shut up. Nothing you have said here is constructive! Ja, those other countries went through the same thing, AND they had forums like these, AND they had people flaming telecoms companies and ISP's.. now WE are wrong because we are doing the same thing and venting frustration? Please grow up. Your comments are pointless and generally inflammatory, but you knew that before you posted anyways.

You still haven't given us an answer as to what to do...! I am willing to bet you don't have an answer - but at least the rest of us are trying to think of one - so stop flaming us for doing so!

BTW what time do you guys at Telkom get lunch? Probly a bunch of Helpdesk people having a laugh pi*sing off the people in the Forums. And that last post went - phew - way over me head mate. I don't play those kind of games.

<u>You still haven't given us an answer</u>

Gamos, I agree with what you are saying, just not with whether or not it happens or not. Telkom has been in the business of telephony for what seems ages! Has our telephone system gotten any cheaper? Yes, there are ways and then there ARE WAYS of slaying the dragon. I happen to like dragons and respect their right and place on this planet. Why just the other day I spoke to a jolly old fellow who read a previous post by somebody on this forum referring to Telkom as a dragon and this particular dragon took it personally! He was very upset and on the verge of tears until I pointed out a beautiful flower growing in the field nearby and he went all gaga over it. Couldn’t stop crooning about its beauty!

Thus dragons are really gentle creatures and their image should not be taken lightly and compared to behemoth giant monsters (monsters are totally different from dragons and completely different from what you see in the movie Monsters Inc.) like Telkom.

A friend of said dragon pointed out to me the other day that in the middle ages there were good kings and bad kings (today you should refer to the queens as well, but it would be a factual mistake when referring back to the middle ages). The bad kings persecuted dragons because they usually urged townsmen to be independent from the king. Good kings on the other hand encouraged their people to live free and independent lives. A good king would provide roads for his countrymen, schools where they could learn, churches where they could pray and the entire basic infrastructure his people might need in order to live a happy and prosperous life.

Bad kings over taxed their people. They neglected to give the bare necessities for their people and always had some reason why the people may not do this or that for themselves. Bad kings in other words, kept their people in subjection!

Good kings aimed to avoid their people becoming subjects and encouraged them to become freemen! Men and women working for a common good and striving for happiness.

Naturally my dragon friend’s friend is a bit of an idealist so I asked him what this tale has to do with Telkom. He replied as follows. Our good king (government) should provide our country with the basics we need to carry on as (or become) freemen. That includes basic communications infrastructure from which we can build and grow on our own. At the moment our king (government) is preventing this from happening due to a lack of insight, intellect or education. This dragon said that the situation at the moment is geared toward subjection. Keeping people from freeing themselves. He mentioned wireless technology) which is a technology he uses on a daily basis back in his country (which I cannot mention because someone on this forum dislikes dragons and might just start a slaying expedition). The dragon said that people should be encouraged to use technology which doesn’t require a 3rd person to use. In other words why should people use wireless technology provided by a commercial entity if they can just as easily connect and operate the network themselves? It is taking away people’s freedom! After this the dragon had to leave to compete in a fire breathing competition. I got the drift though, and so should you guys…

Gamos, I've 'known' you for a long time now.

It's ironic that your post is as usefull as alot of the garbage on these forums. I'll agree there are some people who are misinformed, and alot of the things are very unconstructive (especialy this)

The thing is, if you disagree with something, say so. Do not ignore stupid posts, correct them rather than just saying that they are stupid.

In the time that you've effectivly irritated alot of people here, you could have found out more about the current telecommunications situation and made some inteligent posts of your own and/or mailed them to ICASA or the very large list of other addresses I forwarded here from ISPA.

I'll agree some things, like on every forum or every day situation, are a load of nonsense - It's peoples right at the end of the day to express their nonsense and you were also free to correct them at the time.

<br />I will hand over my fire resistant armor to you. My shield of vengeance and my sword of truth. To the true heros out there that fights the monopolistic dragons, like you seem to be. a Hero I wanted to become aswell. I was disgusted to see that the biggest number of self proclaimed heros do not always charge in, slay the dragon and save the damsel in distress. They poison the drinkwater, they spread lies in the town. They boast about their knowledge on dragons and then critisize the farmers that refuse to revolt.

There are actually very very few 'true' Dragonslayers out there that not only follows the code of the Dragonslayer, but also gets the job done. To these heros, I salute you.

The new perverted code of Dragonslaying is obviously not in my blood. I do not care to sit in the circle of tall tales and lies even though a true Dragonslayer might sit in the crowd. I'd much rather tend to those in town while the hoards hack away at dragon scales.

Good luck on your quest sir, keep it up...

Man, that is one great post - read it over and over about 3 times. I'm a sucker for great prose [;)] [:D]

I think the adsl subject draws all sorts of people with vastly different reasons for wanting a decent, value-for-money service in this country. Someone's having issues because he can't run his business properly with the current service, someone else can't get enough capacity to share files, someone else gets sky high pings when he tries have a game on an international server. Someone else wants adsl but can't afford it or isn't prepared to put up with a crap service. Obviously we're all from various backgrounds and don't have a lot in common, thats why we argue with each other so much. Where the hell else can we do it? As you say, i'm sure the moderators cringe at some of our comments, but you've got to take the rough with the smooth. Personally, i've learned a lot from this site, technically, and otherwise. Gamos also reckons that people comment here on subjects of which they have limited knowledge. Well, you get that everywhere. I like the fact that we bitch & moan here. I find that in SA sometimes we don't moan enough, we just accept. Like the tax on fuel down here in the cape, R3.7odd last week, over R4.00 this week, hardly heard a wimper about it anywhere. Anywhere else the person responsible for a price hike like that would be tarred & feathered & run out of town.
The fact that Mr White & his fellow monopolists mention myadsl so often means that they're taking note. The steady growth of membership on this forum, coupled with a bit of upcoming competition must be giving them an itch or two.
I say, keep on bitching[:)]
