These kids need our help

Hoping we can help out some kids so they can have the opportunity to realize a dream.

Four youngsters from our small town of Swellendam recently competed at and won the national FLL Robotics competition at the Sci-Bono Science Centre in Joburg.

Their journey started small a couple of years ago, when a local GP and his wife started a robotics club and teaching lessons in their garage. The Cyber Tigers have grown tremendously since their first lessons and with team members now in grade 8 and 9, entered the FLL regional Western Cape competition. They won the regional competition and progressed to the national competition.

Winning the national FLL Robobtics competition is an enormous achievement in it's own right, but it also gives them the opportunity to represent SA at the international competition in Houston, Texas next year. But the costs for travel, accommodation, etc for four team members and two coaches are staggering.

Can MyBB forumites help the next gen of engineers and coders to take the next step and compete on an international level by making a donation or by getting their companies involved in a sponsorship?

This is a cool thing!
I am sometimes overly practical, but I am aware how expensive these kinds of trips can be. Whilst it would be amazing to do, would it not be better long term to raise and use this kind of money for further / higher education or kitting out the lab etc?

I know you cannot always substitute a life experience, but in terms for what is arguably better for these kids future, more resources and the possibility of further education would supersede a trip overseas.

I hear you. I am all for giving them the opportunity for further / higher education. But these kids have been noticed because of their achievements - which would not have been possible without the sponsors who helped them to Joburg and the national competition. The FLL National comp in the USA is known to be a scouting ground for the uni's and colleges who offer bursaries to promising students.

The coaches was very transparent with all funds received and how it was spent. I am happy to say that they did not take a sent from the funds received to get the team to nationals for personal use. Every penny that was left (from this year and last year) was spent on equipment for all the kids taking lessons to use.
 
Fair enough, if it gets them a potential chance at a bursary and also rewards them for their work, dedication and efforts then it sounds like a good thing

Will let the coaches know :D Platteland kids and proud of it

They are all bilingual and communicate in English at the competitions.

So I had a chance to talk to the coach about the site being in Afrikaans.

Originally they had the site set up in English. But the judges at the FLL competition (who are all English) suggested they change it to Afrikaans as the target of their outreach project - primary school kids in small farm schools in the surrounding areas - are completely Afrikaans.

The kids are however working on changing the site to offer content Afr, Eng, Xhosa and Zulu.
 
I made a R200 donation, not because I believe in charity/helping others out but to call out the socialists who I firmly believe are hypocrates

@Slckrck being top of my head, since you are of the charitable sort, why dont you match me.

I cannot recall the other socialists, please tagged them.
