Telkom should install fibre now. They are going to need it in the future anyway. Overseas telecoms experts say that telcos need to install fibre right now otherwise they will be caught off guard when the demand for bandwidth becomes to much. THEY WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO REPLACE THE COPPER WITH FIBRE - IT'S INEVITABLE. Why not do it now?

When local loop unbundling becomes a reality, what incentive will Telkom then have for building a fibre network? When all the companies have access to the local loop, who's going to build the fibre network?

Maybe one just needs fibre to the node (fibre to the curb). Then the access technology can be something like VDSL / VDSL2(100Mbps symmetrical).

What do you guys think?
Fibre to the curb OR fibre to the place? (100Mbps OR 1Gbps)

You answered yourself.

Yeh, this could be a problem.

Think SA's answer is community ISP's. Telkom/Neotel can provide back hual and the small ISP's can provide local access through whatever means they see the most cost effective.

Pipe dream I know :)

Yeah I think Telkom will have a 10-15 year lag (at least) when compared to overseas countries.... We live on a 3rd world continent, and Telkom is DEFINATELY 3rd world in their service....
I don't have too high expectations of this happening anytime soon.

Telkom will handle this kinda like Eskom handled electricity :
In 1994 Eskom's power stations ran @ 60% capacity, which made providion for any station failing etc...
Because they became more uhmmm "profit-driven", they increased their capsity over the years to accommodate the increasing need for electricity, and now , whilst running at 100% capacity, they wanna wake up and build new stations.....

Our Government-controlled (to a degree) monopolies doesn't have the capability to look into the future.

Eskom tried to build a number of new power stations in the 90's but our precious government wouldn't let them...

I bet that even if the need arises for fibre, Telkom will still delay installing it.

Telkom is one to blame for remaining a 3rd world country !!! Fibre is probably going to be expensive but I think Telkom have the money to do it many times over...and with an upgrade of infrastructure there should be an increased interest in shareholder investment and stakeholder growth...yet our shareholders are all backwards anyway

One incentive for Telkom is money - if they dont build it they wont be able to use it either. I also dont see any hint that access to the local loop would necessarily be free.
