Hi Guys,

So I have been thinking about starting boxing at The Armoury in Cape Town. Just want to see if anyone has any advice and/or experience with regards to starting out boxing?

I have to admit, I am incredibly unfit. I have not really done any exercise in what must be close to a year. I have also been smoking +-30 cigarettes a day for the last 6 years. So, as you can well imagine, this could be a really big challenge for me...

So yeah, any feedback would be much appreciated!

I'd get reasonably fit before I start anything like that. IMO you would need to give up smoking before you start any serious exercise.

Maybe start walking for starters and do some sit ups/push ups etc and get your body into a decent state before you tackle boxing.

3 mins of boxing is seriously tough!

If you just go you will drop out after the first few sessions... You need to get boxing fit... So buy a heavy bag and some mits... Hang it up somewhere and start punching. Once you can sustain 3 minutes non stop... Youre ready to go to the armoury. Good luck.

I disagree... yes you will die for the first few months as you gradually get fitter but you will then be developing Boxing fitness and work the muscles used in the sport, which the instructors at the gym know better then you will how to work so go but expect to be dead after each session and watch your own progression... i started MMA fittish from playing Under 21 club rugby first few lessons i did light sparring with boxing i couldnt keep my hands up for 3 minutes as the guys have said but from perservering you get to the point you are looking for.

Yeah, thats what I was hoping for. I don't want to get there and then they get annoyed because I am so unfit. Hopefully the cater for new people that are there to try and get fit/improve health etc.

Why do you need to be fit BEFORE you start something like that? The training will make you fit.

That's like saying "You need to be fit before you can go to the gym hey" (which kind of make sense looking at all the muscles just hanging out around exercise machines for hours)

exactly without knowing anything about the gym i can almost guarantee you wont eb the only unfit one in there its not like the movies where everyone in the gym is super fit and ripped :p

It depends on a few things:
how intense are the classes (if they are super intense, you might be inclined to push yourself too hard, and do damage)
How much do you want to get from the classes (if you are only going to last 3 minutes before blowing, it would actually be better to do a 20 min jog on your own for a few weeks. You will get more benefit, less likely to hurt yourself, and arent wasting your money)

Yes but that's the trainer's job to assess your level and start you off/give you advice on how to reach the level you need to be at before even beginning to spar. They usually do a test (or at least the MMA ones do) to assess your level before laying the law :p

Hey , I was so badly out of shape when I started boxing I suffered for 2 months .

Dont waste any time just get in the gym. I work with and manage boxers everyday...it is one of the best and fastest ways to get in shape.

Cheers

Mathew

Boxing is an awesome past time, the adrenaline will get you pumped and primal.
you'll almost feel like a gladiator, I boxed in a London gym for 7 months, it was tough starting out but I came right after 1 month.
the trainers were tough on me from beginning, pitted against a guy 30kg over my weight, got me pissed off which was their intention.

Just be prepared for some bumps and bruises, you'll feel it the next day.
