Hello,

was looking to get a GTX 580 cuz they awsum :)
anyway, i know us is always cheaper than us but Prophecy is selling it for R5390.95 ( http://www.prophecy.co.za/evga-015p31580ar-geforce-1536-384bit-gddr5-pcie-p-86300.html) and Newegg in america is selling it for $560 which translates to R3838 according to Windows 7 Currency converter... that cant be right??

EDIT: i wonder how much shipping is to here from newegg... do they ship here?

Yep it's normal. Our government rapes us with import tax duties and customs..

thats shocking, how much does shipping cost round about to here from say UK or US? you could probably save alot

Yep. Probably around 500 bucks. Usually why people import high end things themselves to cut costs, if your card goes you'll have a problem with warranty. However if you try and order multiple quantities customs will get suspicious and problem nail you. If you do order from overseas, ask them to send it as a gift. Usually that works to getting around customs..

R 3,838 + VAT = R 4,375.32 + freight + duties estimate (R 700.00) = R 5,075.32 v 5,390.95

Yeah, ITCynic's right. You'll get hit with customs badly (unless you get very and I mean particularly lucky). Also, newegg doesn't ship outside the US still. There are parcel forwarding services available, but they are often overpriced and require monthly subscriptions...If you wanna go that route then subscribe to a single account with a group of friends (the more the merrier) to keep your overall costs down (coz they charge per package as well often).

I normally work on 10x USD.. .e.g 500 USD = R5000 (this inlcudes freight, taxes, handling fees etc) So if a product is listed well below that on Newegg or the likes, yes then maybe it's worthwhile importing it yourself.

When we did a us import of computer stuff it was as follows:
exchange rate: $560*6.82 = 3819.2
US mail shipping: $80 *6.82 = 545.6
1%charged by paypal: (3819.2+545.6)*1.01= 4408.4

14% vat +10% customs: 3819.2*0.24 = 916.6
916.6+4408.4=R5325.00

Thanks nakedpeanut!

The saving of R66 isn't justified with the time that it'll take + the issues with the warranty.

na a i hear people telling me that 16GB go for like $20

EDIT: i guess we just cant win :(
