we had to find out ourselves that they change the MTU settings whenever they feel horny but couldn't get laid, they switch from using their stupid proxy without notifying customers, WE had to determine their capping was flawed (and might I say, suffer the consequences)

With all due respect, as someone who has lived in SA all his life, I am pretty used to figuring things out for myself!

I just tried to get hold of the helpdesk and I'm sure their on holiday. In the 4 monthes I had this I go through once, then I tried the irc and silence. Does anyone know wtf is happening over there? Has anyone had any response on today's disconnetions?

For the average user that doesn't have a clue it's not really helpful now is it?

Take this guy I know, he's been working on PC's for longer than I have, yet, only knows how to open IE and his Outlook. If you tell him to go to his Device drivers by right clicking on My Computer and going to properties, he'll piss in his pants and rather get a technician out billing him over R1000 to get it fixed (something that could have been remedied by himself)

I point to how incredible connection makes their money. So for the average "not clued up on computers" type people, having to figure something like that out is more effort than it really should be.

But he stated he was an IT expert! And yes I agree with you, especially about those Incredible Corruption charlatans.
 
As for the skills- true, the skills are on this forum. I don't doubt that :-D

not one of us is prepared to work for WBS, etc... not so?
 
jamie your MTU is way too high, you will probably find packets are fragmenting.

And I know a reason to stop using zonealarm... EVERY KID IN THE WORLD HAS EXPLOITS FOR IT, just search bugtraq

Jamie, let me guess, you've just returned from working oversees (Europe, UK)?

Do not think you'll get the same level of service in SA - and it will be frustrating, because you most probably had a 2Mbps line at home and 15Mbps at work.

Just be happy that there is something like iBurst available now! When I returned from the UK in Oct 2003, Telkom still had the monopoly and 3GB capped ADSL costed R1016! (I refused to pay that and got back on a dial-up modem - it was VERY painful.)

I'm very happy with my iBurst and Kei & Slimothy have some good advice - just ask.
 
Yeah I agree with noone on wireless technologies in SA...also been through this - maybe that is why it is not so popular in europe or maybe management in these companies don't know what customer service is?

but zonealarm is more of a Jack Russel that wakes you up every opnce in a while to warn you that someone is outside the gate. Sometimes no one is there yet it yaps, sometimes it yaps because its hungry, other times it yaps because its doing it job and other times it just yaps because someone was just walking past your house.

jamieb, have to agree 100% with you!

iBurst is utter crap!

I kind of understand the people that have no choice (no ADSL in their area etc), but if you have a choice, cancel that crap and move to something that at least in some aspects resembles broadband!
 
All these ppl say CHANGE YOUR MTU I have not seen a return comment as to whether you tryed this... I think it might help alot.

I forgot how many times i installed Zone Alarm and regretted it.
Trubble is it nukes everything with it when you take it out.

Until IPCOP arrived, aaah _ then I found my sweet spot:)

However, to get back on topic. NO. This forum should not be shut down. It's through forums like this where companies' real lies are exposed.

The good guys are still here. UUNet, Internet Solutions, and the other good, established service providers. Working within the established regime, and delivering good service.

Sentech and WBS do not. And for that they should be exposed. This forum HAS to continue.

As for firewalls, even the supposed best one WinGate, for which I paid a lot of dough, was compromised and exploited on my machine, they dropped a DLL into my windows/system and I then received a warning from my then, dial up ISP. I am now using a dedicated hardware firewall and things are better but still that sends me the occasional e-mail list of ports it blocked for no reason.
