Growing between the towns of Grana and Casorzo in Italy’s Piemonte region, the Bialbero de Casorzo is an old mulberry tree with a cherry tree growing on top. While a tree growing on another tree is not so uncommon, a fully-grown, perfectly robust tree growing atop another is a super-rare sight.

If a plant grows non-parasitically on another plant, getting its nutrients from the air, rain, and debris around it rather than from its host, it’s known as an epiphyte. In the case of the Bialbero de Casorzo, the cherry tree on top is the epiphyte, and a strangely healthy one at that - while most epiphytes are stunted and have just a brief lifespan, this cherry tree is as big as any regular cherry tree, and shows no signs of weakness or disease.

Exactly how it got up there is a mystery, but according to OddityCentral, locals have suggested that a bird dropped a seed into the mulberry tree, and as the young cherry tree grew, its roots passed through its host's hollow trunk to find the soft earth below. The branches of this ‘double-tree’ now stretch up to 5 metres across.
While in the 1960s it was rumoured that a similar double tree was growing in Croatia's Plitvice Lakes National Park - this time a peach and a spruce tree - its presence remains unconfirmed, so right now our Italian double can enjoy the status of being the most impressive two-tiered tree in the world.

In my yard, I have two Mulberry bushes planted by the English colonialists about four decades ago, one is hollow , with new branches sprouting every year.... Love these tree's to bits.... Looking at slicing them soon....

Mulberry jam....yummy, grew up on the stuff. Dunno how times me and my brothers got in trouble for tree climbing and specifically mulberry picking. Them purple stains don't come out.

Had 3 trees in our yard, each very different and about 50m from each other and the fruit from each was unique

Back in the 70's.... There was a Englishwoman, if we brought her enough mullberries, then she would bake us a pie... Bearing in mind , that this was an oasis in the middle of the Namib Desert...
