This is how "SMS spammers" get your number

You can approach any of the 3 Big Bureaux's, Transunion, XDS or Experian
You will fill in some docs and then you will be able to use the services
You can either do it online or in a batch

Thruworths spammed me and when I called them to find out where the hell they got my number they said they got it from the Credit Bureau. I contacted the Bureau and they told me that if you do not specifically tell them to not share your info they are entitled by law to share your contact as they please.

I think that stinks! It's not even as if I have a bad credit history. I think it is pretty much in very good order. Even so I have to wonder about how wrong things have gone if an organisation like this starts dealing with people's personal information on the side. Stinks!

Political will to fight crime at any level is, on the face of it, completely lacking in our government. It's a free-for-all in their book of rules.

Ya, I hear what people are saying; but IMHO, the biggest culprits are the DTI or that component of them that deals with Company Business Registerations - when we registered some 18 years ago, this was the only place that had my private numbers! I suppose they sell this info to "database collectors" because in the preceeding 6 months, I had calls non stop from; organisations requesting donations, selling shares or share market tips, property overseas, investments, plain old scammers etc. Got so bad, I changed numbers after 6 months! :mad:

Banks can't sell your data and they dont.
The bank will update your profile on the Bureaux, the Bureeaux will then update your data to who ever supplies your ID number to them.
 
An appeal to all readers - when you get sms spam, PLEASE, do not just delete the message.
File a complaint on waspa.org.za and quote the regulations below that are in breach. With repeat complaints WASPA will heavily fine the culprits and in some cases suspend their WASPA membership. In that case it would be very difficult for the culprits to continue doing business.

WASPA’s prevention of spam code of conduct

Members will not send or promote the sending of spam and will take reasonable measures to ensure that their facilities are not used by others for this purpose.

Any direct marketing message is considered spam, unless:

the recipient has requested the message;
the message recipient has a prior commercial relationship with the message originator and has been given a reasonable opportunity to object to direct marketing communications;
the organisation supplying the originator with the recipient’s contact information has the recipient’s explicit consent to do so.

Especially if you get spam from Opera Telecom/Sprint Media/Mobmatic because if you're not careful you may find money coming off your cell phone account daily for "content charges"

My personal nemesis is Mustang Marketing which sells Sharetrackin, but they seem to basically be the same company.
I've even been able to put a face to the company: Ring leader

They phone you (not Christo or Karien personally, the marketers) to sell stock tracking software. I've asked them every single time to remove me from their call list, but no luck. My personal favorite was when the marketer told me: "Sir, we won't remove you because it would be criminal for you to miss out on this deal" or something to that effect.
 
i got a contact called spam and ad all these idiots that phone/sms/whatsapp me to it.

I'm no expert, but I remember these opt out options must be at no cost to the consumer.
Making all text/voicemail spam currently going around illegal.
What happened to that? Cant I sue every company that spams me because they dont provide a way to opt out that comes at their cost rather than mine?
 
I sometimes think these "OPT OUT" sms messages are just a way to sign you up to "content" services.

I think it should be made illegal to charge person for 'content subscriptions' if you can't prove that the person is aware of it (ie. weekly opt in) or show that the user is logging in and using his account.

We had simcards at work that was raped with multiple content charges and it wasn't even in use for most of the time..
