IR's quite easy once you have the hardware in place. Shouldn't be a big issue.
Stepper motors is what is used in, amongst other things, cd-roms, for the tray.
You have quite a bit of control over them regarding RPM and they can have quite a chunk of torque, so should be good for your purposes.
 
Maybe slightly off topic but could you do this to the boot of my Audi?
It would have to wrok off of the current system (i.e.: the boot release button on my existing remote) and 2cm per sec might be a bit slow...

EDIT: Hang on... I'm being a tit - surely if the risers that re in there already were pressurised it would open once the lock is realeased...
 
Why slinky do you find lifting the boot to open a bit to heavy on the arms or what?

Not really, just a bit uncivilized ;)

Think about it though: knock off work and as you approach your ride click the boot open... by the time you get there its waiting for you to drop your laptop into, snap it shut and youre off!

There are WAY better bits than RC car parts ;) Wiper motors, for one, are crazy powerful.
Wouldn't mind giving a paintball turret a go. I have the knowledge to build one easily, save for the manufacturing of some metal work, but unfortunately I don't have the finances for such a toy right now.

I don't really agree. He's quite the DIY guy, as far as I understand. Servo's won't have enough torque, except for the big badboy ones, which cost quite a pretty penny as well.
The stepper motors he can grab from dead cd-roms or as I said, grab a wiper motor. The microcontroller work would be quite basic if you have moderate skills with similar work.

New printers too, actually, if I'm not mistaken. They're used pretty much everywhere.
Servo's I'd be careful of because in order to control them, you need to chuck out a specific frequency which is a trickier than with the stepper motors. They do offer even more control though. But that being said, a stepper motor with a gearbox will offer both control and huge torque. My good friend built a CNC mill from scratch with three of the buggers. They were quite powerful versions though and as such set him back a few rand.
He used a wiper motor, which already has a gearbox normally, to make his solar panel setup (Several hundred kilogram) follow the sun. That's quite a bit of weight to move so it gives you and idea of torque.

would be great to have a pc case being able to open with remote. Nice project. :-)

That's going to be tricky! This one runs off of CAD schematics to cut items subjected to its wrath. I'd really like to see the 4 axis one, must be seriously impressive!

I feel bad having hijacked this thread a bit ...:o

The second one is smaller than the first, but its not going to have a mill head, its a prototype box cutter for packaging. It will have a vibrating blade that will cut the box.

Interesting. How does he interface with it, if you don't mind me asking?
 
not 100% sure on the CAD app they are using. They connect to it with a serial card device (have no idea what its called), via USB-Serial converter, connected to an asus netbook PC. The interface card controls gheko drives which control the stepper motors.

and now i'm going home for a cold beer ! cheers

Well i got the railing system geared rack and pinion.It was surprisingly cheap less that R200.
I will be starting on the motor to rail and try out the automatic aerial motor.Remember all my parts is small to cut down on space.I hope that this project will lead to bigger things.
