for the last 4 days of last month and the first4 days of this month,
my cap usage is 0bytes, and ive done well over 12GB... all local,
perhaps they have figured out how 2 count local seperate from intl. ?

weird.. but cool for me :)

something wierd happend too me too...once i passed the 120GB mark last month my usage cleared back to 0. not that i really care it just would of been nice to know how much i'd used in total by the end of the month :(

120GB..., 4 gigs a day... well i wonder why Telkom has a cap, could it possibly be because of users devouring such huge amounts of bandwidth...? Nah, can't be. Luckily their usage meter is as dodgy as they are.

There is such a thing as fair use. Abuse leads to restrictions.

Abuse? erm okay..whatever u say. so i paid a R1000 for a highspeed line but <b>actually using it </b>to its fullest is 'abuse'. imho your an idiot...to buy a line your not planning to use! anyway just if your intrested i almost never use international because its no match for local sharing in terms of speed and reliablity.

now go back to your telkom kennel or go bark for them elsewhere before someone has you put down.

Easy tiger... have you read the other forums lately? Let me quote in <b>bold</b> so you don't miss this one:

<b>"Virgin.net has stopped accepting new broadband customers because its service is being strangled by ongoing problems.

Said the ISP in a service statement: "A small minority of customers are constantly uploading/downloading large files and thus clogging up the network. We have contacted these customers requesting everyone to reduce their levels of uploading/downloading activity to 1GB per day up to a maximum of 5GB per week so that everyone can enjoy the service in full." </b>

Here's the link, just in case.................

Basically, 120GB is a lot - that's my entire HD. Think about it.

And no, i'm not in the Telkom kennel, i'm probably their worst enemy. Even so, 120GB is a f__kload of downloading, and you can't tell me they're all demo's maps patches and freeware.

It's because of ppl like you that there is a cap, that's what i'm saying. If Telkom, albeit in their infinite stupidity, saw that people were d/ling a reasonable amount of stuff <u>they wouldn't have put instituted a cap in the first place</u>. Sure, the test phase had a cap which they weren't monitoring but that was for test purposes. Now you're right there downloading LOTR III and every anime movie ever made stuffin it up for the rest of us.

*clap* *clap* *clap* nice going. Can i bring my HD around? Oh, sorry it's only <u><b>120GB</b></u> prolly not enough. BTW how many HD's must you have to d/l that much?

Shame,
By downloading aLa broadband standards does not mean the download of data that I want on my hard drive as direct downloads. It is downloading pages of data all the time as I browse. I browse a lot on internet and the original cap Infosat had on ''Data download'' I exeeded in a weekend, therefore delayed my purchase of sat download facility untill the cap were dropped. Funny that they dont seem to have these Broadband problems because I never got complaints or cap limit threats in the last 3 years of running the Sat download system downloading previews and music ect. Do I understand then it is better than ADSL Broadband???? common! . The problem is that the providers DO NOT WANT TO BUY enough international bandwidth to suit the customers in South Africa. They want limited bandwidth with overselling to suck the suckers like us DRY.

hmmm ok ok I’ve cooled off...the stereotypical attitude toward power users as some kind of dodgy abusers got to me. im part of a local sharing community...telkom hasn't mentioned any local congestion and from the speeds i doubt there is any. my international usage was zero last month...and probably wouldnt be much higher without the cap. to be honest international on telkom adsl sucks so bad that i don't know how anybody could actually 'abuse' it without a lot of effort.[}:)]

5 harddrives and yeah 120GB would be insane...i've only got 190GB of hdd space. about 70 GB of that was uploads (telkoms local speeds are 512k+ up as well for some reason).

A good isp/carrier should make provision for users with high bandwidth needs through proper market research and maybe alternative packages targeted at different types of users or lower contention ratios. the need will always be there so what’s the point of ranting at 'abusers' when they are simply users with different needs than to checking grandma’s latest email messages 24/7. <b>Anyway 3GB cannot be excused through flaming power users…its too low for almost anyone!!</b>[}:)]

Btw I have bought all the LOTR on DVD and would not dream of downloading a crappy rip!![:(!]

Lets think of the real reason for the cap and cost. If all mass users move over to the ADSL system if there is no cap at current prices and download speeds is acceptable to most....TK is standing to loose to much money for call connections. Even with R7/call I sometimes spend more a month on telephone costs linking to internet and mail daily than the ADSL monthly fee. Therefore the drive to get as many people on ISDN and pricing the ADSL such as to make IDSN more attractive to hobbyists. They want to retain dial-up online connections. TK cannot or do not want to offer a satelite downlink service as currently with my ISP because it will interfere with their services grouping structures. In a recent discussion with my ISP regards to my SAT link he offered higher upload link via ISDN to improve download total efficiency. But when I asked why can I not get a 128K upload link instead of the 64K I were told that the policy do not allow it as it will again steal away customers from their more corporate offers to such a nice service, specially as the SAT bandwith is not limited in downloads and high burst speeds can be achieved if usage is low.
What the poor TK have not realised yet is that the mass users of internet and PC's is the hobbyist and gamers and thats where the money is to be made. They should review there policy and cater for the market drivers by making it easy for them to participate ie the masses waiting to be able to get on the net.

Well hey thanks for cooling of that's a relief. I wasn't flaming you, we're all on the same side. Why get so aggro? I don't know how to get it into your head what i was trying to explain because you are obviously reading only what u want to. What u said in your previous post definitely is true, and 3GB is a pathetic cap, but the chances that Hellkom is gonna do research and offer tailored packages are slightly zero.

Anyway enough of the insults, it only shows a lack of intelligence.

BTW i don't have any attitude towards 'power users' i'm one myself and miss my 2Mbps leased line i had in the UK, but i'm sure as f__k not going to pay 900 beans a month for DSL in Souf Efrieka. Until it improves drastically anyway. I'm going to try say this one more time and hopefully you understand:
The cap will never be increased or eliminated when they see people downloading that much stuff, whether local or int'l doesn't matter, it's still data that has to travel. We all want an unlimited service, and that's what Diginet or VSTAR is for until Telkom wakes up, but until that happens, excessive usage will be frowned upon by their techies and they will keep pinching all of us WRT bandwidth. They'll have the attitude of 'well they're thinking stuff you [by downloading so much], so let's stuff them back [by instituting restrictions]'

How's that? [:)]

I remember isps in the UK coming out with statements like this last year, shortly followed by caps being introduced by some isps( i know NTL was one), shortly followed by the caps being cancelled as users flocked to other isps with no such restrictions.
Of course, the cap is already there thanks to Big Brother, but the ISPs had positive dialogue with BT, and they had a powerful Office of Fair Trading to lean on BT for anti-competitive issues. It all worked out to the benefit of all, including and especially the customer.
I wonder if we could hear from any service providers on their dealings with Telkom?
I think "dace" is a good example of how things are going to go for "power users" over here, sharing locally will be the order of the day, and ISPs will have make provision for that. If not, they'll stand accused of not catering to the needs of their members.

Telkom - South Africa's Handbrake to progress.
