A banner page drops and you have 3 choice:

1) Continue on R0.30/meg out of bundle charge (could get pricy but maybe you dont need to buy a whole bundle just a few extra megs (at full speed) to tide over to the new month).

2) Buy a data bundle (you are given about R1k credit to use to do this and the amount gets added to your next bill according to the helpdesk guy). Unused portion carries over to the following month (added to next months allotment).

3) Continue on a trickle feed (about 56k) for up to 10% of your bundle data package amount (i.e. 150mb on internet 2) FOR FREE, yes mahala etc. and is quite snappy on a 3G connection feeding my ipod touch via a 3g router on efficient mobile oriented sites for the usual facebook, email, News24 mobile etc.

You have to accept one of these options else the banner stays.

I must say I'm quite impressed with 8ta so far, they don't just cut you off like some providers but aim to provide a usable service, give you choices and keep you happy.

and on vodacom... you have to load airtime, somehow, without internet? then put the simcard of your data card in a phone, then convert the airtime into a bundle, and hope it works... otherwise they are more than willing to charge you at R2 per meg whether your bundle has gone through or not... 8ta and cellc seems miles ahead even though they just started....

Just bought a 8ta sim and R50 airtime. I am using the sim in a USB modem. How do I load a data bundle?
 
What would be nice is if all mobile service providers had a banner that came up when you had say 10% left to warn you, AND give you those options, so you could easily transition to what you actually want when your data runs out.

But kudo's for 8ta actually implementing this (I might consider getting an 8ta sim just for browsing the net using my phone at uni when the network goes down).

If you are using 8ta connect, then you do have use of the USSD function
I.e. you can see balance or upload airtime.

I like the idea of 8ta given you the choice, especially the option to carry on at trickle speeds. That means that you should be able to keep on jabbering even if your data is finished.
 
Good idea 8ta for the banner, I agree with edg3, when will the other service providers implement this?
