So essentially the world cup is about forgetting all the worlds problems and getting psyched about soccer. I think the conspiracy theorists are right then...

Mind Control Theories and Techniques used by Mass Media
Apr 28th, 2010 | By Vigilant | Category: Vigilant Reports

Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate the masses. It shapes and molds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and acceptable. This article looks at the workings of mass media through the theories of its major thinkers, its power structure and the techniques it uses, in order to understand its true role in society.

This is more than a conspiracy theory, it is reality. Look at how the minds of many individuals on here are moulded by what they are exposed to in the media on a daily basis. People reach the point where they no longer question what they are seeing and reading and just accept it as the truth no matter how absurd.

OP, I fully agree with the sentiment. So what if the world takes their focus off all the bad for one month. What harm does it do? Unfortunately all the optimism makes it a lot more difficult, and less acceptable, for some to peddle the bad news they love so dearly.

what ryan says is true . i for one think it "could be basic in your face brain washing" to something thats happening in the background of our political parties. with these parties running all over the place in our country its kinda hard not to be suspicious lol. on the other hand . a little unity and peace would be cool.

Sure, if it was only for 1 month. But look at how long our country has been obsessed with the world cup now. 3-4 years since we won the bid?

Zacdoc89, a year ago I would have thought it was all harmless fun. Then i watched the documentary called 'Fall Of The Republic - The Presidency Of Barack H Obama'. Check it out sometime, it's even available in its entirety on youtube. OK, i don't take everything in there as being hard solid facts, but it did open my eyes to some things.

I've never been a harcore sports fanatic, so i don't follow any particular sport really. I've only recently been to a couple of live rugby games at the new green point stadium and Newslands rugby stadium. It's quite amusing to see how people get so worked up about sports, which I guess is the point of it. The point of sports at a national level (according to the documentary) is to distract the male[1] population to the point of obsession by getting them to identify and support their team in a very tribalistic fashion. So much so that they don't care what else is happening around them in the world.

National or international sport of course isn't the only distraction in this world, it's just one of many. Just part of the grand scheme to keep us happily entertained and distracted from the important things going on in the world unfortunately.

[1]Actually some females seem just as sport obsessed as the men!

It is called entertainment. It is no top secret conspiracy.

I think as humans most of us have big enough brains to not only enable us to focus on the sport but also keep track of everything else that is going on around us.

I'd be more worried about America's usual method of creating distraction.... go to war and take everyone's attention off the real issues at home.

This has always been the point of all forms of entertainment. To provide a distration from our every day lives. Nothing new or sinister about it.
