It’s been an interesting week on the science and technology frontier. Let’s have a look at some of the developments that are paving the way to our future.
Water detected on mars and the moon
An Indian spacecraft, carrying US instruments, as well as another passing probe, have both transmitted data that confirms the existence of water on the moon, although in minute amounts. In related news, large ice sheets under the surface of mars have also been confirmed.
Scientist generates images from brainwaves
Berkeley neuroscientist Jack Gallant, has demonstrated his latest research, which takes recorded brainwaves and generates an image of an observed event. In 20 years, perhaps we’ll simply download our holiday memories directly from our brains.
Honda unveils battery powered “unicycle”
Using some sort of engineering wizardy which involves lots of wheels, Honda has produced an electric “unicycle” – the U3-X – that can travel in any direction. The device is controlled by leaning in the direction one wishes to travel. With a top speed of 6km/h it is targeting the elderly folk in the Japanese market. Not a demographic typically known for their rock-steady balance, the U3-X also features some advanced balancing technology.
Electronic eye implants on the horizon
A new eye implant technology from the researchers at MIT could be tested on human patients within three years. The device requires wearing a pair of special glasses that send a wireless signal to the implant, which then electrically stimulates damaged nerve cells.
Tooth implanted into eye restores vision
Sticking with eye implants; another solution to certain types of blindness is to have a tooth removed, a lens inserted into the tooth, and the tooth implanted into the eye. There is even a neat little video of the first American woman to undergo the procedure.
