So do you guys keep those inordinately large and awkward boxes that your fancy big-screen TV's and sound systems came in, "in case it needs to be returned" ?
For how long?
Has anybody successfully managed to flatten one of them - mine has industrial strength staples holding it together and I doubt it can be flattened.
How much of a disaster would it turn out if I chucked the box and then needed it to return the TV for a warranty claim or repair? I mean the packaging is pretty specific, so it's not as if I could get one from a friend.

I have never, until I had to move with my 65" TV for the first time for which I did not have the original box.. things would have been a whole lot less stressful during the carrying and driving process if i had the original box..

Some companies now offer boxes you can buy for your TV when moving it, so I imagine they have some form of universal protection too, but not sure on that..

But I bought a new TV in August and I am keeping that box until I no longer own the TV or it breaks for good..

At the very least you should keep the box until the TV is out of warranty, so in the event of a return under warranty, you can't damage the TV easily during transport and they claim no warranty claim due to physical damage that you may have caused during transportation for warranty claim..

It depends on the item. Expensive items I'll keep the box for a month and then throw it in the recycling bin nearby.

I figure thats reasonable should I have to take it to the ombudsman if a manufacturer starts making unreasonable statements like you needing the original box for the life of the product. Most electronic devices fail either very early or much later like the graph below:
