Hi all, would just like to get your thoughts on the latest gen Opel Astra, more specifically the turbo models. They seem to be decently priced 2nd hand and are good looking cars, but unfortunately Opel doesn't have a great rep in SA anymore. So if anyone has owned/owns one, some feedback on experience, reliability, fuel consumption, common problems etc. would be appreciated. Is it worth considering?

I've heard that people struggle to get lower than 10l/100km in the 1.6T Astras.

I personally think Opels are decent cars but their after-sale service sucks badly.

Maybe go and do a bit of research rather than relying on other peoples word when it comes to things like this.

Research like what? Relying on what the manufacturer's specs are??

These are real world figures I've read where people bitch about how disappointed they are with fuel economy.

Why don't you chime in with something of value? Do you drive one? Give us your experience.

Lol. All I mean is in terms of sales volume (new cars) it just doesn't seem to be on most SA buyers lists, based on the sales figures

"You've read" holds less sway than manafacturers specs.

What else should I rely on? I've driven the 2011 Astra 1.4T, decent car, drives nicely and the fuel economy wasn't bad - Think it was around 6.7l/100km.

I've checked fuelly and could not find anything relating to the Astra J 1.6T. So where else to go but an Opel forum and read what they've said there?

Again, do you know anything about the Astra J? Can you contribute anything?

We both own 3 of them..

They're crap cars, we use them in demolition derby's only since we don't care about fuel consumption.

No, manufacturers are the first to lie about the true fuel consumption. This is pretty grade 1 stuff. Im not defending the quoted figures in this thread, but the manufacturers are always bloating these figures with there own "testing" methods.

I just compared my finding to the MotorWeek 2012 Verano. Seems the 1.6T is ahead of the old 2.4 N/A
