I drive a BMW but i like the new volvo's, is this one of those no-go manufactures or can i consider one?

Your thoughts on the brand?

Decent enough cars, but get one that's a demo or a year old secondhand model. You'll save many many thousands.

You can pick them up cheap second hand and well the value still drops very fast from there,be prepared to keep it for life rather than resell.
They are nice cars but unfortunately just not very exciting and can be costly out of motor plan especially since parts are scarce.

Go have a look at old s40's they go for as low as R15 000 -R25 000! Equivalent Audi's,merc's and beemers still pick up R35K-R50K. This tells the story of Volvo resale value.

I guess that's my main concern, will i be able to sell the car after 3-5 years.

You will be able to sell it,but you will loose a lot of money in that time on the car.

Aye. If you'd like to sell after the plan expires it might be better to look at something more mainstream like the three big German brands or so on.

Good car, bad service (pending on dealership), bad resale value

Having owned two, I'd go along with this. The dealers really do seem to be completely out of their depth when it comes to servicing and maintaining these vehicles. My car spent 3 months last year sitting at various Volvo dealerships while they tried (or tried not to) figure out what was wrong with it. They did make good eventually, but it cost me dearly in time and aggravation. I'd never buy another one, at least not in SA.

I'm going to generalize now, but you will possibly find that this is the case with many manufacturers and not only Volvo.

We have found that the quality of appie, as well as final product, has been going steadily downhill for years.

Nett result is that you end up with a halfwit who only knows how to change parts, rather than diagnose and fix - if you find a dealership with a "real" mechanic who can actually get to the root of a problem and fix the damned thing, buy one of their cars!

There are not many of them around, however!
