Thoughts on buying a Polo TDI

Hi All

I'm looking at a Polo 1.9 TDI 96 kw. 2009. 85 000kms. Going for R125k. Seems like a good price.

It's from a VW dealership. It was owned by one of their mechanics who just traded it in (first owner).

They say the cam belt is still fine, but if i finance through them or trade in we could arrange that they replace it.

Other VW dealerships said it should be done around 105000kms, but must be done by 120000kms.

the last service was done on 75000 km in December 2012.
He said that he did an oil change every 7500 km this was done on 83000 km’s.

Nice cars. The 96Kw is the 3-door one, right?

Price seems fair and cam belt change at 120k is also okay. Oil change needs to be done every, 7500Kms, which by what they say has been done. Does it have a service history?
Also, check to see if the turbo has been replaced or had any issues?
I know they have a recall on these turbos, but not sure which year Polo it was.
 
Nice car, considered buying it at one point. But to me, 125k is way too much for that car. It has always been overpriced. And remember, those turbo's are not the most reliable.

Overall, the car is epic. Good fuel consumption, quick and reliable. But not for that price.
 
It's the 5 Door 96 KW version.

Yes I am aware of the Turbo issues, but i thought that was with the older models.

Concerning the price - I called a VW dealership near me and asked them about it; they say that's an excellent price and that they would have put it on their floor at around R137k - considering the year and low mileage.

I've tried finding the same model, same year, similar mileage - but can't find any direct comparisons.

The only comparative offers i can find make this one look like a good deal.

yes it does have the service history. it's at VW master cars - they say they will do an 80 point check etc...

And a 5 door. I would buy it. Not part of the recall, low mileage, service history, 5-door. Nice car overall. Definitely a good deal.
 
It should be an absolute peach as long as you show the turbo some sympathy. Lovely cars to live with.
 
Which VW Master Cars is this car at? Let us know if you decide to purchase and how the branch service is. Always looking for good contacts.
 
I loved mine (74 kW model). The only pity is that the thieves loved it as well. :cry: If you're lucky the turbo would have been replaced on the recall. IIRC the 5 door was only available for a while - they later sold only the 3 doors, so it might be that that one was in the recall batch. I'm not too sure of myself, though.
 
I have the 2004 sportline(74kw). It is a great car , not a days hassle and it has 207 000km on the clock. 105 000km service was a bit pricey @ R6000 but that included the cam belt. The minor services are usually about R1000. I find that i don't drive the car very hard often as it chugs along on the low end torque...
 
Yes, VW keeps their value good. in the long run you know you will get your money back.

It was from VW Paarl. Very helpful - drove the car to me in Seapoint to test drive. Negotiated that they do the cambelt service.

Having it delivered early next week :-)
