Hi guys

Since I have moved into my flat a few months ago, I have basically been internetless, except for using my phone to connect now and again. I really need to get connection.

I am not sure what to get. I am thinking I should either go for Telkom Mobile's 10GB + 10GB after hours for R299 pm or I should get Telkom's 1mb uncapped for around R480 pm. I see there is a telkom line at the flat but it's not connected so hopefully if I do go with the fixed line, I won't need to do installation and such. Also I have a spare router which just needs a new power supply which I can use, where if I go with Telkom Mobile I will have to buy a router. I live in the Sandton area, what I have read is that the Telkom Mobile signal seems to be decent there.

The only thing about the Telkom Mobile option is that I think it's a 24 month contract, and it seems as though the market may change somewhat in the near future with Afrihost's entry with the month-to-month contract.

Telkom 1mbps uncapped option http://www.telkom.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-1mbps/

Telkom Mobile 10GB + 10GB option http://www.telkommobile.co.za/plans/postpaid-data/10gbpromo/

I would be using the connection mostly for browsing, maybe some youtube and perhaps a bit of downloading (depending on the cap) and of course some online gaming. I don't particularly want to pay more than R500 pm.

Any other thoughts and opinions on what to get would be appreciated.

Sometimes we cannot always advice you which route to go but if your budget allows go uncapped route that way you have peace of mind and not worry that you have like 2 gig left come middle of the month.

Ask yourself the following:

Are you frequent mobile users on the go, read email on your tablet/smartphone, browse etc (If that is the case rather go mobile route) or alternatively try Afrihost mobile for now until you can make up your mind.

As you mentioned above you a frequent gamer and unfortunately mobile isn't the best route for gaming due to latency, also did see that Telkom are offering free router to new subscribers adsl(month-to-month basis nothing about contract) R500 per month includes ISP phone rental, adsl rental, etc, not sure if it was uncapped or wait closer to the festive season normally they do have good deals, like free adsl rental for 3- 6months

Tough one, I'g say go with the mobile connection, and don't bundle yourself with ADSL now with so much happening in the mobile arena. Latency for gaming shouldn't be too bad, and if you have decent TM coverage go for it. At the same time you're locking yourself into a contract (TM), which isn't exactly desired. Rather opt for m-m (month to month), and get 2 x Afrihost Mobile. R197 x 2, R394 for 20GB (albeit guaranteed until Feb 2014).

Again TM has 25GB + 25GB for R999, 6 month lapse.

Yet again, ADSL speeds are getting bumped (nothing conversed on price, but it's presumed to stay the same), so by Dec or early next year your 1Mbps turns to 2Mbps.

Do your research. Decisions decisions.
