Thousands dead in Chinese quake

prety obvious? all the people killed in this quake amounts to the same amount of people murdered in SA in about 150 days. Lets not forget all the aids victims

- about 800 people die of aids every day in SA.

- and people killed in motor car crashes????

Taking into account the huge population in China, 8500 people is like a flee in the middle of the sahara desert.
Its already been proven on this forum that Iraq is safer than South Africa, and that you are more likely to be killed in SA than in a country thats currently at war. Makes you think.... I would rather takes my chances with a few earthquakes in China thanks.

I was in my companies Shanghai office on the 38th floor (top of this building) and it swayed like hell - we all evacuated and only later heard of the major quake many K's away.

Actually by the time we realised what it was, it was over - only lasted about a minute.
At first I thought something I had at lunch (not a pub lunch) made me dizzy, I put my head on my arms on the desk and that didn't help, then I sat up and saw the puzzled look on others faces, and then I realised that it's not just me.
The window blinds were swaying and when I stood up it was like standing in a boat in a slightly choppy water.
By the time we all started evacuating it was all over - I was one of the wise ones that took my bag and notebook with me, whereas the rest had to wait a long time to get back into the builiding.
 
I heard the death toll is now at around 12 000 but I reckon its gonna be much higher :(

I wonder if those buildings are as relatively earthquake proof as their Japanese counterparts.
 
Latest estimate is 12k dead and another 18k or so buried.

According to Sky news in the one province, 80% of buildings are destroyed.

High-rise buildings are a good place to be during earthquakes...up to a certain point on the Richter scale...then it just sucks.

I find the situation in Burma more catastrophic/sad. Bloody politicians with their backward ideas.
 
China has a history of quakes, and they have seen some serious ones:

1556 Shaanxi , estimated 850 000 dead, mainly because most of the population lived in Yaodongs (living quarters hollowed out of mountain sides)
1920 - 200 000 dead
1927 - 200 000 dead
1976 - 255 000 dead

lots of smaller quakes:

April 1985: Earthquake measuring 6.3 kills 22 in Yunnan.

August 1985: Xinjiang hit by earthquake that kills 67 people and injures more than 100. The tremor measures 7.4.

November 1988: Earthquake measuring 7.6 devastates remote areas in Yunnan, killing at least 730 people and destroying about 400,000 homes.

October 1989: Series of tremors in northern Shanxi and Hebei provinces kill 29 people and leave 60,000 homeless.

April 1990: Earthquake measuring 6.9 kills 126 people in northwestern Qinghai province.

October 1995: Earthquake in Yunnan kills 50 and injures more than 6,000. The 6.5 tremor leaves 170,000 people homeless.

February 1996: Earthquake measuring 7.0 wrecks scenic mountain town of Lijiang in Yunnan, killing at least 304 people and injuring more than 16,000.

March 1996: Earthquake measuring 6.9 jolts Xinjiang, killing 26 people, injuring 128.

May 1996: Earthquake measuring 6.4 rocks Inner Mongolia, killing 15 people and injuring more than 200. Nearly 400 aftershocks follow.

January 1997: An earthquake measuring 6.4 kills up to 50 people and injures more than 40 in Xinjiang.

April 1997: A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 strikes Xinjiang, killing nine people and injuring 60.

January 1998: At least 47 people are killed and more than 2,000 injured when an earthquake measuring 6.2 rocks Hebei, devastating mud and brick homes in two rural counties.

February 24, 2003: At least 94 people are killed and more than 200 injured when a quake measuring 6.8 hits sparsely populated Jiashi county in Xinjiang.

lots of earth quakes, bad storms

where have i read that the world will end and storms and quakes mark the beginning of the end?
