More than 4000 HIV/Aids patients have defaulted on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment in Gauteng since 2011, the DA said on Tuesday.

Health MEC Hope Papo revealed in response to a question in the Gauteng legislature on Tuesday that 4410 people had defaulted, said Democratic Alliance Gauteng health spokesman Jack Bloom.

Papo gave the major reasons for default as stigma, discrimination, and denial.

Some HIV-positive mothers failed to give their babies Nevirapine to prevent infection. Other people gave false addresses or returned to other provinces or countries.

"It is disturbing that so many people default on Aids treatment as this leads to ARV resistance and the need for expensive alternative treatment," Bloom said.

"While some factors are outside the department's control, every effort should be made to ensure that Aids patients take their medicine," he said.

Starting to sound like TB.
Last thing we need is special drug resistant AIDS.
The mind boggles sometimes.
You're dieing, here's an option to stay alive longer.
No, Not for me.

It sounds terrible, but it's almost not worth it for the human race to treat these people!
Better to save millions than thousands.

Half of the defaults would go away if they find a way to stop the narcotic use of Anti-Retrovirals.
I don't care who you are, but if you don't give the prophylaxis to your baby, you need to be nailed for abuse.
Preferable to a tree.

I'm giving it 10 years before there is a version of Aids like XDR TB.... and then there will be big problems.

Idiots. If they don't make the effort to return for the treatment, then htey don't deserve sympathy for their suffering.
