Two Nigerian men and a South African woman appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court for allegedly beheading a dog while it was alive, and eating its meat, the Stilfontein SPCA in the North West said on Thursday.
The three appeared in court on Wednesday and were granted bail of R2500 each, said inspector Suzette Kotzé of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
"The court ordered that they not be allowed to keep any animal on their premises, dead or alive, and not even have meat in their fridges, like frozen chicken," she said.
"They were ordered to report to the police station three times a week, and to hand in their passports."
The case was postponed to July 23.
Last Thursday, Kotzé responded to a call and on arrival at a premises found the three had minutes earlier slaughtered the dog.
"A medical report shows that the animal was not dead at the time its head was cut off," she said.
"The dog's head was cut off with a serrated knife, and it was put in their fridge for consumption later. When I got there, there were already cut pieces of the dog's meat in the pot."
Police were alerted and the three were arrested for animal cruelty.
Two other dogs on the premises had been moved by the SPCA.
Kotzé said the Nigerian men believed that dog meat could prevent diseases like malaria.
"They also believe that by eating dogs, they cannot get attacked by witches, or be poisoned," she said.
