Can anyone help with where to get a three button mouse, i.e. one with a proper middle button? This is for CAD, numerical processing and is also useful with some xterm type stuff.

There is the 3Dconnection CAD mouse http://www.3dconnexion.eu/products/cadmouse.html, but this costs over 2k.

If all else fails then maybe it will work out to get a gaming mouse and assign the knuckle button.

Unfortunately that does not provide the desired level of precision, although it is more or less workable.

What is a knuckle button?

I'd suggest get a gaming mouse as suggested and use one of the side buttons.

If you're OK with remapping the buttons, I'd look at the Logitech G402. The combination of an optical sensor along with an accelerometer and gyroscope makes it much more sensitive to small, precise movement, and it tracks a lot better than mice that are twice as expensive. It made a big difference to the photo editing I was doing at the time when I reviewed it.

The only thing it doesn't have is a free-wheeling scroll wheel, which would make it pretty much perfect.

Thanks guys - thinking about it properly now, mapping a side button should do the job. I checked out the recommended mice and they all look like they can have the correct button assignments made using xbindkeys. It also looks like a RAT 7 that I have around will be able to do this, maybe it is about to get a new home.

What is a knuckle button?

Protruding button behind the scroll wheel meant to be pressed with the underside of the knuckle.

Aaah and here I thought you were talking about the button you can press with your thumb's knuckle (the button under your thumb) like on the Logitech M705. I have gotten so used to that button that I prefer it over a middle button or using a scroll wheel button.
