Three rangers, who were arrested for murder, were granted bail in the Ubombo Magistrate's Court on Saturday, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said.

"The rangers were arrested on Christmas Day for shooting an alleged poacher. They were released on R1000 bail each," said spokesman Musa Mntambo.

Mntambo said the rangers were doing a foot patrol on Thursday in uMkhuze Game Reserve when they saw three suspected poachers.

When the rangers tried to stop the men they ran and the rangers chased them and put all rangers on alert. The entrances to the park were closed.

"Rangers outside about a kilometer from the reserve saw a guy coming towards them and asked the man to stop and hold his hands in the air," Mntambo said.

"The man took out a knife and when the rangers realised that he was one of the suspected poachers, a shoot-out occurred and the man died."

He said the rangers called the police to investigate a case of alleged poaching but when police arrived they arrested the rangers.

KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed three rangers were arrested and were released on bail.

"They were arrested in Jozini after they killed an unarmed man they claimed is a suspected poacher," spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Investigations continue.

However, acting chief executive of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Dr David Mabunda said he was surprised that the rangers were arrested.

"The poachers are getting away with murder while law enforcement agencies are at war with each other," he said in a statement on Friday.

"It doesn't make sense and I'm furious."

He said the rangers killed the suspected poacher when they suspected their lives were in danger.

"We will allow the law to take its course and we will spare no resources in providing legal support to our rangers and also emotional support by referring them for counselling once they are released," Mabunda said.

"I plan to meet with the National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega to set up a protocol to handle these matters."

WTF is it with arresting people on Christmas day ?
Could they not take a chill pill for one day ?
May be an attempt to keep them in jail for the whole long week end , seems they pissed off some one .

But the deceased was unarmed

Minimum force?

"The man took out a knife and when the rangers realised that he was one of the suspected poachers, a shoot-out occurred and the man died."

Does knife no longer count as armed?

The rangers are probably justified in trying to defend themselves from the alleged poacher who was brandishing a knife, but fatally wounding him was excessive force. They could've shot him on the leg or shoulder or something. Just to disarm and immobilise him.

Ever been in a knife fight? And do you shoot?

You have a knife I have a gun pointed at you

You do the math....really not fscking difficult

The Rangers lives were not in danger

One day, while you show that knife-weilding maniac that you have a gun, he will slowly cut you to pieces.

The math suggests that the likelihood of a person brandishing a knife proceeding to use it is far greater than the same scenario with a gun. Google knives and their fatality - you'd be surprised.

A person armed with a knife cannot win a fight against one carrying a pistol. Busted As Jamie practiced knife-throwing techniques, Adam made a leather belt holster and worked on quick-drawing with a paintball pistol. They then faced off against each other, standing 16 ft (4.9 m) apart; Jamie used water balloons with the same weight as his knives. Even though Jamie could throw before Adam drew and fired, after several trials Adam was able to shoot Jamie and dodge the thrown balloon.
Next they investigated the scenario of a charging knife wielder. Adam and Jamie determined that Jamie could run 24 ft (7.3 m) before Adam could draw, cock, and fire his pistol. When Jamie ran at Adam with a foam knife from this distance, Adam was able to shoot him; a second test at 20 ft (6.1 m) gave the same result. However, when Jamie started at distances of 16 ft (4.9 m) or less, he successfully stabbed Adam without being shot. They decided that a knife wielder at close quarters could have an advantage over a gunfighter, depending on the circumstances, and declared the myth busted.

The measurement of lethal force is not one of assessment of the weapon but rather of its wielder.

None of us were there so it is all speculation.
going by the article

3 rangers with guns.....1 poacher with a knife
I hate a poacher as much as the next guy, but how many scenarios do you think would justify maximum force.....given the detail?

Anyway...maybe he went crazy and attempted to stab all three Rangers simultaneously through the hearts

rangers are trained for these things....they are not new to the effective use of fire arms and staying composed in crisis situations.

All of them - that knife is deadly, end of story. Unless someone stops the attacker, someone could end up dead. 3 vs 1 or 20 vs 1, the 1 with the knife has shown a mental capacity to inflict maximum force and should be dealt with in kind: even if you accept he is outnumbered, that he could kill at least one of the 3 before the other two realise he is serious is enough of a reason to blow his brains out without conscience.

Also this was not a one on one situation.....you had three guns against one knife

You'd be surprised how poorly trained many rangers are. I have a friend who did rhino patrol for a few years and he also was arrested for attempted murder. What he can share with you is an eye-opener. While the training of rangers is improving, specifically those on rhino patrol, not all rangers enjoy this training and not all rangers come anywhere close to combat training.
