Thugs gun down two cops

By Jacques Breytenbach

Two crime intelligence police officers were shot and killed in Diepsloot on Monday while tracing a gang of thugs who were wanted for a number of crimes, including armed robbery and murder.

The two police officers responded to a tip-off at about 5pm.

They were told that the notorious gang of nine Zimbabwean nationals, who have been "harassing the community of Diepsloot" and the surrounding suburbs in the last couple of months, were hiding in a shack in the area.

On entering the shack, the two officers saw eight men playing cards, while a ninth, believed to be the leader of the gang, stood in the corner of the shack.

The two officers asked the men to identify themselves and it was then that the alleged gang leader pulled out a gun and shot the two officers, fatally injuring both.

Other SAPS members were quick to respond and eight men were arrested, with only the gunman managing to escape.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding confirmed on Monday night that "two officers of the National Crime Intelligence head office in Pretoria were fatally wounded while conducting a special operation".

She declined to give details of the operation, or the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Next of kin still have to be informed.

A police officer at the scene, who did not wish to be named, said the gang leader had shot at SAPS members at the Erasmia police station when he was nearly arrested by the police on a previous occasion.

The gang were wanted in connection with a variety of crimes, ranging from armed robbery, to murder and attempted murder.

It has been alleged that the gang was involved in trans-national crimes as what they would steal, or the money they made by selling the stolen goods, would be sent to their families back home.

RIP guys

Since they arrested 8, I would assume that these two officers entered the dwelling while the rest were outside.

These shacks dont have very big enterances so the extra officers usually form a perimiter.

I dont like the fact that the gunman managed to get away

As I said that is my assumption.

If they went by themselves and entered without having their weapons drawn then they made a deadly tactical mistake.

Ironic how the cops suspected of doing their jobs (a crime in South Africa these days) are those that drop like flies but the teen-beaters and club-wreckers seem to be at large. They'll probably put the gunman up for election to the parliament. I heard its a prerequisite these days; you must have been convicted of a serious felony or else you are not eligble to be elected. Signed, President Zuma, Father of the New Konstatewshin.

A bullet couldn't stop this policeman

A police officer is in a serious condition after being shot by a suspect who tried to hijack a fellow policeman.

Despite sustaining several gunshot wounds, Constable Brandon Gates of the Umkomaas dog unit wounded the suspect.

Captain Ronald Paul, an off-duty Scottburgh policeman, was in his private vehicle at the TC Robertson Nature Reserve, Scottburgh, when a suspected hijacker crept up to his car, said police spokesman Capt Vincent Pandarum.

"The officer opened the car door and the suspect reached to the back of his hip as if to draw a gun and demanded money.

"Paul drew his pistol and warned the man to leave, but the suspect attacked him and grappled with him to take the gun," he said.

During the scuffle, the suspect was shot in the thigh, but he still fled into the nearby bush, Pandarum said.

Several officers responded to the incident, including Gates.

The suspect was tracked to a sugar cane plantation about 150m away from the scene of the attack.

"Shots rang out and Gates was found to have been shot and wounded. The suspect had also been shot while in the dense sugar cane plantation and as he came out of the plantation, he was shot and fatally wounded," Pandarum said.

Gates - who sustained gunshot wounds to his face and body - was taken to St Augustine's Hospital in a serious, but stable condition.

Pandarum added that first reports indicated that one of Gates's lungs had been perforated.

"Charges of attempted hijacking and attempted murder have been opened for investigation. An inquest docket has also been opened in respect of the suspect," he said.

One less crimminal

Hope the cop recovers

But why do only two of them go when they had been tipped off about a gang of nine?

Because the rest were all sitting at a vice roadblock, waiting for bribes, or busting parties for bribes?

Cops are 99.999999% low-life criminal scum themselves, so most of them probably knew not to bother their colleagues while they were playing cards.

Were the 8 allowed to finish their card game before being arrested?

I reckon they probably have quite a lot of card-playing time ahead of them. ;)

Crime intel cops shot dead
31/03/2009 21:05 - (SA)

Johannesburg - Two members of the police's crime intelligence unit were shot dead in Diepsloot during an investigation on Tuesday, while three other officers were wounded, Gauteng police said.

Senior Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said Abraham Sikgwele and three other officers on duty were following up information on a wanted criminal in the Diepsloot area when the shooting happened on Tuesday night.

The group were on foot in the settlement when they were met with heavy gunfire and Sikgewele and a colleague were killed instantly while the other two colleagues escaped with minor injuries, said Naidoo.

"The brutal and callous slaying is met with the strongest condemnation possible."

Acting National Commissioner Tim Williams had sent out a strong message to all policemen and women to stop at nothing to bring this man, who is known to the police, to face justice, said Naidoo.

"This man is dangerous and must be approached cautiously... an earnest appeal is being made to those that know this man to come forward with information of his whereabouts," he said.
