Thugs gun down two cops
By Jacques Breytenbach
Two crime intelligence police officers were shot and killed in Diepsloot on Monday while tracing a gang of thugs who were wanted for a number of crimes, including armed robbery and murder.
The two police officers responded to a tip-off at about 5pm.
They were told that the notorious gang of nine Zimbabwean nationals, who have been "harassing the community of Diepsloot" and the surrounding suburbs in the last couple of months, were hiding in a shack in the area.
On entering the shack, the two officers saw eight men playing cards, while a ninth, believed to be the leader of the gang, stood in the corner of the shack.
The two officers asked the men to identify themselves and it was then that the alleged gang leader pulled out a gun and shot the two officers, fatally injuring both.
Other SAPS members were quick to respond and eight men were arrested, with only the gunman managing to escape.
Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding confirmed on Monday night that "two officers of the National Crime Intelligence head office in Pretoria were fatally wounded while conducting a special operation".
She declined to give details of the operation, or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Next of kin still have to be informed.
A police officer at the scene, who did not wish to be named, said the gang leader had shot at SAPS members at the Erasmia police station when he was nearly arrested by the police on a previous occasion.
The gang were wanted in connection with a variety of crimes, ranging from armed robbery, to murder and attempted murder.
It has been alleged that the gang was involved in trans-national crimes as what they would steal, or the money they made by selling the stolen goods, would be sent to their families back home.
