Constructive Criticism - GConnect

Sorry, I just have to even it out a bit. My 5c and my experience...
Today I have had a number of periods where the net is just not available - it lasts up to a minute or so. Page not found... retry... nothing.

I need to install special software and remote into + connect from my server every day to keep the connection alive overnight.

Don't get me wrong - Ulitmately service and price are top with GConnect if you buy on a per gig basis. Their support guys are on cue and doing a great job.

For me though, I will be resorting to 2x 5Gb Telkom accounts. One via do level 3 that includes 5Gb traffic (works out to R28 ish per gig). Then the second 5Gb in a seperate telkom account (R47 is per gig) - that will make up the bulk of my regular bandwidth and includes at least 30Gb local traffic. Thereafter I will opt to topup with GConnect as their price per gig is awesome and their service allows me to use it while travelling.

This is not a bash GConnect thread - they have brought some much needed innovation and competition to the market. If I was alone or only needing a few gig a month, I would use them alone.

You sure it's not on your side?

To verify that it's not on your side, why not purchase an 1Gb Axxess prepaid account and see if the problem remains. If the problem still remains, then it's either your line or router.

If not, then you'll need to talk to technical support at g-connect and see if they can assist you.

you do realize that this site was down for a couple of hours? Is that part of your problem?

I came off months of WA to GConnect yesterday at around after lunch and immediately noticed intermittent issues. The issues have persisted. Definitely not my side and definitely related to GConnect. I was in a logmein session and was disconnected - next thing logmein not available... a minute later it's back. Has been doing that to myself and a colleague of mine. Perhaps I have static DNS servers in my system somewhere... will investigate. I will have a saix account to test with early next month. ;)

Lol - no, I thought it was but realised it wasnt when I saw the rest of the web was still there.

G Connect Problems

First of all let me say that the support team at G Connect are Fantastic....
Sadly, there are still issues: Using a Linux (Ubuntu 9) computer and connecting to Facebook has display problems. Also there are times when I have to make 3 or 4 attempts at downloading my mail before I am able to do so (Vista with SP2).
Webafrica still feels nice and solid and reliable compared to G Connect. For the extra R20 I will remain there until these issues are resolved.

I only use Linux, nothing else and will also give them a try later in the coming month to see how their service is.

Hope they are decent!
:)

i am more than happy with gconnects service. never had a problem! at least they are providing cheaper internet!

I have a couple of issues. One is that I have an account and my wife has one. It's a mission trying to figure out whose account is in use on my home network. I had the impression initially that every pc needs to log in with a username and password...that does not seem to be the case. I'm solving that problem by just using one account. And the other issue is knowing exactly what my usage is. The connection manager somehow is not giving me that info. On the other hand, it could just be me and my ignorance.

At the end of the day price and data carryover overrides all these issues.

Ok... to sort out your issue - you need to put your router into modem mode. You then need to create a pppoe connection on each of your PCs connecting to Gconnect. You also need the connection app on each machine, or use the landing page.
Currently your router is not in modem mode and it will handle nat and assume that whoever logs in first is paying for all the surfing.

What a mission! GConnect have still not sorted out the double login problem. They share the same PPPOE login amongst all their users and then you have login using their annoying "Connection Manager".

A step backwards, not forwards. Sure it's cheap, but then so is a $2 hooker.

I think the reason for this is that you can download the allocated data via a couple of different devices (pc, laptop, cellphone, pda) and the only means of validating across all of these is via a web browser.

Strange - the only time I ever see you voice an opinion it's something negative about G-Connect. Looks like one of GConnect's jealous competitors.

Service is great, got a reply this morning within 4 minutes.
Unfortunately you can only pay via CC and for me this is not an option.
I feel thats kind of wrong, i mean how hard is it to set up a bank account and do an EFT? Just issue a reference number or something to use as reference.
I really wanna try them as its so cheap.
Guess will stick with WA for now.

My biggest gripe with GConnect has always been the fact that they do not offer a standard PPPOE account to login with, therefore requiring you to login twice, first at the PPPOE layer with a universal username/password and then second at the http layer with a user specific username and password.

Even if I was a competitor, I certainly wouldn't be jealous about that!

Guys, please don't turn this into a Gconnect BASHING thread. They are actually brilliant with their service and response times. They are also trailblazers in the price per gig department for under 5Gb. ALSO, they are offering a mobile internet at under 50c a gig without a contract. THIS is all the kind of thing we need in SA...

I started this by voicing constructive criticism here and request you do the same or start another thread. I'm not asking you to keep your comments to yourself, just stick to the thread suggestions...

Perhaps it's partly my fault for the heading - I have edited it now...

You'll be happy to hear that I'm using Smoothwall with their services.

Sure I need to use the login window after connecting, but that's a small price to pay for a good service :)

Agreed! The price and service as commendable in a SA context.
