Hi everyone.

Need some advice here.I need to retile a bathroom 20 sqm in total (floor and wall)
The shower panels need to be removed.
I was quoted R5600 for labour only and I need to supply everything( tiles, grout, water proofing). I'm not to sure what the going rate is in Cape Town but it seems awfully high.Any opinions?

Bathrooms are probably your most complex tiling jobs as there are tight spaces, potentially lots of cutting e.g. steps of the shower, tap holes etc. As well as the shower floor itself which needs precision. Most guys won't give you a per sq meter rate, but a job cost due to all these details.

But even at R100/square for labour would be a lot, and then you'd be on R2000, so it does sound steep.

How many square meters do you have to remove?
Any other demolition required?
Are you also installing strips? (Plastic or aluminium edging)
Who's removing the rubble?

I do tiling jobs regularly.
I charge:
R54/m2 to chop off the old tiles.
R920/10m2 to load up and remove the rubble.

I charge R210/m2 to tile, made up as follows:
Glue & Grout R48/m2
Tiler R70/m2
Consumables R12/m2.
The balance is for project management, transport and my profit.

I generally turn down a tiling only job as I don't make money out if them.
I only do tiling as part of a bigger project.

Other items:
The toilet and basin must be removed and refitted, that's not included above.

To remove and refit a shower door is R2480, it's a kak job.
Tiler charges R450 to mosaic a shower floor.

I charge more for Porcelain as the glue costs more.

Sounds legit, that labour in the bathroom is crap work, removing old tiles is very messy work

PS: (after seeing the reply above) client must supply Aluminium edge trim.
If the client says theyll buy plastic edge trim I'll turn the job down.

Also, tiles must be flat, if they want to use these beveled tiles that look like a brick, in a bathroom, I'll turn the job down..

Are you physically doing the manual labour yourself?

It's common for contractors to charge more for smaller jobs like this, else it really isn't worth their time..

Hello everyone,

So I had to bite the bullet and pay as I have tenants moving in and finding an available tiler at this time of the year is rare as most places are closed.

He is charging R5000 for the removal of the existing tiles, removal or shower door and laying of the new tiles plus mosaic on the shower floor only. He is not removing the toilet or hand basin as the tiles around it can be cut accordingly according to him.

So in total it is

Bathroom floor 2.5m2
Shower floor 1m2
Wall tiles 12.5m2
Main entrance 4m2

with a 3 year guarantee on labour

Sounds reasonable to me, if not cheap, considering how much work is involved. I would want double that.

But then again, I am not a tiler and will never be as the pay is low and the work is a lot and people don't want to pay.

South Africans do not want to pay for any service construction related. The mindset here is not sustainable. Also why most bathrooms looks crap and attention to detailing is non existent.

Then there is also a the problem of companies charging a lot and refered by others but they use cheap labour and the work still ends up looking like a goverment service.

It's a lose lose situation.

That's dirt cheap. He will probably walk away with R500 profit if he is lucky. Chances are you won't be satisfied with the work anyways.

It's a fair price.
I'm not in agreement with tiling around the pan and pedestal though....

For the same work I'd charge slightly more - removing and refitting a shower door so it doesn't leak, is not lekker work.

So please don't feel ripped off....
