I have a basic Sahara PC UPS running a bedside light and other small items. When the power went out, i hooked the UPS to my 950w genny which is rated 650w output.

This sounds weird but the ups then tilts like a pinball machine.

Why?

It stands at an angle?

I knew someone would say this.

Sounds like a tilting pinball machine, ever heard one?

It like keeps on switching between ac/dc

Your generator is not providing stable enough current for the ups.

Sinbad, thanks, and there is no solution other than another type of generator

Nope. You need a genny with avr, and probability a bit bigger than the one you have now.

You are hearing a relay, switching on and off.
Voltage from generator probably a bit low

Ups detects voltage from generator. Ups switches load from inverter to generator.
Generator voltage drops as a result of the sudden load
Ups detects voltage dropping and switches load back to inverter
Genny recovers to normal voltage under no load
Rinse and repeat until something is cooked.

Exactly, I was just too lazy to type it out :-)
