Time for an Upgrade - Need You're Input

3850 and 70 in crossfire are good but suck when AA is applied as usual

8800gt does not smash the 9800gx2 though

The 9 series graphics cards have proven to be quite a let down, the 8800GTS is probably your best bet. I know of people who have actually modded the bios on the card (flashed it) to make 8800GTS the same config as 9800GTX. Cause the 8800GTS is same chip inside as 9800GTX. But if you only have R5k to spend then the 8800GT (definitely).

Now the Ram, would recommend the Kingston HyperX DDR2 800 - 1GB, get FOUR of these comes to total of R1400 from Simplicity. then your computer won't lack speed. Will run great with the dual channel. Plus they each have heatsinks. :D

I'm pretty sure the dude has 667 DDR2, ..he will NOT benefit ANYthing from going to 800.

4GB is only necessary if using Vista 64-bit, ..I KNOW, going from 2 to 4GB in XP gave me minimal gains at best.

vista with anything less than 3 gb is not good

u need 3 gig or more for vista to run well

In fact 9600gt SLI offers similar performance to the 9800GX2, ..and only loses to the 8800gt SLI by notable margins in very high-res configs.

2gb is plenty for xp but still i notice an improvement when i went from 2 to 4 gig with xp

no page file FTW

True but will need XP/Vista 64bit in order to see full 4GB's :( Still could you go with 3 and still not have a page file?

Yeah I agree, your machine is still good.
Can update to a Core2 Quad if you really want. Roughly 2k

And I'd suggest a 8800gt... I don't the performance gain on the 9800gtx or gx2 is worth the price

charlie the gx2 is well worth the money

the gx2 get double FPS than the 9800gtx or anything lower

880gt
9600gt

tested with a friend in assasins creed

25 frames on high compared for 55+ for the gx2 is huge man :)

Eish!? you got a GX2 Killadoob? :p
6k for a GPU is a little too much for me!

double the fps is a little too much. I'd say it's 30fps vs 50fps not 60
I will say though that I do like using the 9800GX2 its really strong. Played Crysis DX10 with 4xAA @ 1280x1024 :)

no shockg i tested it with a friend of mine who had a 9800gtx, he went and bought another one because he could not believe how the 9800gx wasted his card

suffice to say he is getting more fps now than me :) which makes sense

i was getting double or close to it on the games we tested

assasins creed was exactly double to his 9800gtx

trust me i tested it with him

exact settings everything

now i was getting almost double with a 9800gtx so im sure it would easily get double what an 8800gt gets

glordit i picket it up for 5.2k man, thats why i bought it :)

this card is super fast, its actually amazing to play crysis with some AA

pity grid does not like sli or i can only imagine how amazing that game would look

Do you have identical CPUs, motherboards, RAM, software setup, etc? Otherwise it might not just be the 9800GX2 making the difference :D

he has a q6600 @ 3.6ghz i have a q6600 @ 3.6ghz

he has 4 gig ram like me, uses vista 64 bit

only difference is he had an sli mobo with one card running

o i have raptor raid he does not, doubt that will make much difference

That's very odd, maybe CPU limitation or driver differences. I've used a number of 9800GX2 cards and even the XFX Black Edition which is by far the fastest card you can buy in the country, doesn't double a standard 9800GTX in Crysis I found, but then again it's hard to compare people's rigs when so many things are different in them. Different bottlenecks etc...

Either way 9800GX2 is a brilliant card, but for the same money you can get GTX 280 :)

LOL dude of course I'm not comparing single cards...
A single 8800gt or 9600gt works well. If you want more, either of these in SLI tops a 9800gx2 in some respects...

And last I checked, 2x9600gt is cheaper than one 9800gx2.

Obviously, if you don't have a SLI mobo, get a GX2.

I guess it's just my opinion that SLI 8800gt or 9600gt is more bang for your buck ;)

8800GT/9600GT SLi is faster than single 9800GX2 always has been. GTX 280 is faster than 9800GX2 as well =P

I am really happy with my 2 X 3870;s runs very nice! Price vs performance Is great! if you are running XP 32bit or vista 32bit for that matter dont get more than 2 gigs ram! Wont work.

Your system is still fine man, what HDD are you running like it was mentioned the lag can be from that or system bloat. Cpu is fine ddr800 does give some performance gains but not much.
