Time for an upgrade

Yes it's fine. The 5850 will be matched with the 945. It might bottleneck but only slightly. What's the total cost on that?

BTW can I recommend against the Odin 585s? They have very poor number of cables and I had a nearly new one blow on me with just a 260 recently. Worthwhile to go a bit extra.

Around R6000

How about the Coolermaster RS-500-PCAR eXtreme power 500w instead of the Odin?

CM 500w r570
AMD socket AM3 Phenom2 x4, Quad-core 945 - r1587 (nearly same price as i5 750 - but I suppose cheaper mobo/ram makes up for it)
MSI 790XT-G45 AM2/AM2+ r900
Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5 256-bit r3000

ok.

Would rather take the i5 750 much better gaming chip than the 945, and it oc's like a demon :D

Ya but the OP is doing this on a tight budget. I'd take the i5 750 over a Phenom as well since they cost the same in SA. But the OP is trying to use his old ram so he can get a 5850, and the GPU is where the biggest gains will be made

If you shop around you can get 955BE for R1600 and for R150 more on the 5850 you can get the Sapphire Vapor-X......

But remember you can always sell off the old pc lock stock and use that as an add-in on the new one.

@ cerebus

Yeah those are the specs

Like I said I'm not a "hardcore" gamer

I'm upgrading primarily with one game in mind. I'm looking at value for money components.

Must admit I am hesitanting over the price of the 5850. Is it really a massive leap ahead of the 4850 I bought little over a year ago. A little more and I could get a PS3. :erm:

Will look into that thanks.

Yes it's a significant improvement. There really isn't anything lower that would provide an appreciable jump forwards. A 5770 certainly wouldn't.

5850 scores 678, whereas 4850 scores 381. So...more than twice the gains in fps.

Yeah it really is impressive. Look a PC gaming upgrade is a big investment and the real bulk of that is going to go on the graphics card. A 4850 can already play anything out there, just in more and more of a limited way. If you're willing to spend r6k on an upgrade (and if you sell the parts you can bring that down to <4500) the graphics card is going to be your main expense and you don't want to shortchange yourself on it.

Agreement, it is here.

Indeed. Not the first time I've spent R3000 on a GPU. The 8800GTS cost that much ;)

Can somebody post the conclusion from review of the PSU

I think I'll buy it now before my current one dies :o

Ah your noble 8800gts. That was my first foray into the world of 'real' graphics cards.

That review just goes to the main page. Which psu is it?

Interested in a 4850? :D
