hey,

Didnt even know these forums existed! Good job guys..

Quick one.

Want to run a time machine back up off an external USB 2 500gb drive attached to a time capsule... Essentially extending the capacity of the time capsule... Any ideas?

I don't think that will work. When you plug in a USB drive into the Timecapsule and it is configured properly then the Mac will see that USB drive as an External Drive separate to that of the Time Capsule.

Just to give you an idea, timemachine does an incremental backup every hour and then compresses it. After 24 Hours worth of backups it then compresses that and so on...

Every time this is done the Time Machine writes an index to let the Mac know where the data is stored. So in theory if you were to plug in a second time capsule the Time Machine won't do a Full backup of your system. It's clever enough to know what was done in the last backup and just continue. If you want to restore a file that is sitting on another storage medium time machine will prompt you to plug in the relevant storage device.

Does anyone know if there is some sort of fix for Time Machine to backup your Aperture 2.0 library? At the moment it does not back it up.

Should work - since 10.5.2 you've been able to use an external hdd attached to the Airport Extreme just by selecting it as a Time machine drive.

My advice is to do it via a cable the first time - it will be loads quicker. :)

Cool cool... The only reason I ask is cause I know it possible on Airport Extreme..

So my idea is take a Drobo drive with 4TB connected via USB 2 to Airport extreme and you have a 4TB RAID'd Time Machine back...

But my question then is why get a time capsule then?

Because iirc enabling it on the Airport Extreme was a bit of an accident. :o

You dont think that a 4gb (technically 3gb if you're using 4x1gb hdds) Time machine is going to be a bit of a waste?

EDIT - speculation that it was a mistake - http://www.tuaw.com/2008/04/09/time-machine-via-airport-extreme-not-officially-supported/

Well Time Machine was made for SME's.. and a 3TB (:P) RAID'd Time Machine Backup would be ideal. Esp since SME's usually can't afford a whole SAN solution?

i have not seen a way to get external hdd through time capsule to back up with time machine? also what grates me is the inability of time capsule to be partitioned without opening the stupid thing up and removing the drive

Not having a time capsule I can only speculate but by the looks of this it is possible. http://gizmodo.com/362391/time-capsule-initial-verdict-smooth-sailing-no-surprises

I'm just thinking that even over a n network its going to be painfully slow at times.

Also looking at the Drobo as it looks and sounds like the way to go for backups. Fast and reliable and upgradeable.
