This could as easily be a post over in one of the other threads about load-shedding options — but with TM being potentially “always on”, does give it a bit of different spin — so figured I would ask here.

I would normally have a TM external 2TB HDD plugged in permanently, both at home and the office, whenever I am at my desk with my MBP. With TM quietly doing its thing in the background, I don’t have to worry about accidentally deleting something, or making unsaved changes — since TM is there as a useful form of versioning control. And, of course, “off-site” backups over and above Backblaze.

However, thanks to load-shedding, I have just lost my 3rd external WD drive over the past year and a bit.

What options to prevent this? Would I need to consider a mini-UPS (like they have for router’s/modems) to potentially keep an external hub powered up?

To be clear — the office has backup power — but the power trips completely at changeover, before coming back up a few seconds later. This has obviously happened enough times while a backup was taking place, to cause issues.

How do the rest of you deal with external drives and load-shedding? Or are you all just way better at watching the schedule, and not having anything plugged in during your stage(s)?

Yeah, you'd need to keep power on the hub or plug it into the laptop directly.

I don't use Time Machine personally - everything is synced to the cloud, and the stuff that needs versioning sits on GitHub ;)

Time Machine does make local cache backups so there is that and you don't need to keep it on permanently for that reason.

You can change the backup frequency and then do it accordingly outside of load shedding. You can also enforce doing it on battery if you prefer.

Why not just use a drive powered by USB and plug it directly into the machine and then it runs off the battery like everything else.

Problem is with "desktop" style hard drives is they all have full blown power supplies.

My solution is an 18TB Unraid server living in the garage powered by the sun. :)

Gizzu 65WH + Raspi + HDD

Setup Raspi as a TM using the HDD mounted for storage. It will give you many many more hours than a loadshedding slot

Buy two usb powered HDDs and keep the one permanently connected to your MBP and the other one once a week. You can setup more than one TM.

Not sure what the problem is. As creeper suggested - use a bus powered USB HDD.

My TM plugged into UPS to keep our internet running during load shedding.

I too like the convince of a local backup that runs autonomously.
