two on afrihost and one one with wbs.

i sont use the wbs one but i find when outlook fetches mail for the first
time when i connect iburst takes ages to figure out that outlook is
trying to fetch email. sometimes it times out and other times it works
perfectly... anyone know why?

There has been talk in other forums of such delays being related to a lack of reverse-DNS being in place, but methinks that was with smtp and not pop3...I don't even have a @wbs.co.za email address so I cannot comment further...perhaps someone else knows what's happening there...

I get it when iBurst has just reconnected or is disconnected or about to drop the connection for reconnection. Probably DNS related.

yeah it happens when i first connect.

but lets say i have been ocnnected for 4 hours and i open outlook it struggles. th only mail that gets through nice n quick is wbs mail but nothing else. sometimes i can wait up to 5 minutes. once it connects the prolems go away. weird.

Wait, you're saying that your @wbs.co.za mail is quiker to start downloading via pop3 than Afrihost? - if so, it definitely sounds like a DNS issue, what DNS servers are you using? There is some DNS server info in the FAQ thread...

DNS? no idea? i connect via ethernet. as far as i know dns is handled by wbs or am i missing something?
Ok, do an ipconfig/all from a Command Prompt window:
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\...>[b]ipconfig/all[/b]
Copy the DNS Server lines & paste into a reply here.

C:\Documents and Settings\halicon>ipconfig/all

dns is same as mine - sorry to sound stupid but why are the ip addresses different in the first one to the 2nd one ?

It's impossible to download single mail with >150kB size! You get 25-30% and download stop. The same time i can use webmail or ftp the same site. The same PC with ANY different connection (ISDN, DialUP) retrieve mail with no problem. This problem is ONLY when MAIL download speed (through WBS) is ~3-5kB/s. If MAIL d/l speed is >30kB - then it work just fine!

Reported many times to iBurst but they don't have brains to fix it!

I had this when my MTU was slightly too big. Was the only reason why I started fiddling with MTU.

My is 1352. Max working Ping 1402. MTU 1430 work with no packet defrag.

So obviously not that... Mine is 1424 on WinXP, 1432 on Smoothwall

it is a weird problem... i can download big to small emails... so no problems
its just takes a long time initially then it's fine...

except mail.wbs.co.za... that either is super quick or does not work at all, but then i dont use it...

strange probelm.

MTU Setting

I had the same problem while i was trying to find the best MTU setting, it went away once i dropped my MTU setting to 1432.

Hope this helps
:p
