I am renting a house and the oven/hob is a 1950's model frigidaire Flair which was made by General Motors before many of us were born. One day recently the front door which weighs a ton just slammed down and nothing will hold it up except duct tape. Being of a tinkering nature I reckoned the springs or rods were misplaced or broken so I dismantled it and managed to reposition the spring but there were so many tufts of insulation sticking out I gave up. You see back then I am sure GM used Asbestos insulation and I sure as heck am not messing with that stuff. I wore a facemask throughout and took the entire door off and dumped it in a black bag then I sealed off the mouth of the oven with black bags and masking tape. The insulation wasn't crumbly at all but it was loose in clumps... but better not to take any chances. I then advertised for a repair person but nobody responded so I then contacted the Landlord who told me to ditch it and allocated R2500 for a new freestanding oven.
Now I normally cook on gas. My preference is for 4kg cadacs (of which I use 3) and I only ever used the oven for baking.
A search of this city found only one model oven (a defy compact- something that looks like a dolls toy) that would fall within the allocated budget. Problem is that it doesn't fit standard baking trays.
Now the Landlord lives in Jozi so either appliances are cheaper up there or he's been smoking crack to issue that budget and the rent is pretty high.
The cheapest gas oven with gas burners I've found is totalgaz or defy at R4000 plus 1500 gas line insulation.
I looked at shop soiled goods but the cheapest was R5000.
Anyone have any ideas where one might find a freestanding stove oven unit either shop soiled or better than compact? The problem with "used" ones is that you never know when they need repair or like my frigidare, need to go on the scrap heap.
