The SA Government has been stalling reforms in the telecoms industry for too long now. Clearly, they do not have the leadership or the will to do what needs to be done.

I say its time to stop playing by the governments rules. Clearly, there is a complete vote of NO CONFIDENCE. Forum after forum, press releases after press release, and NOTHING HAS HAPPENED!!!!

What can we do as consumers to enforce real change??? It is not time to boycott the use of all Telkom telecommunications for 1 week?

If you feel like shutting down the entire country for a week, then sure. If you want to be prepared to punish Telkom then you need to make sure you don't sign any long term contracts so that when alternatives come along then there are customers ready to move across. Until then sit tight and twiddle your thumbs with frustration.

Country Shutdown

The economic cost of shutting down the country for 1 week pales in comparison to the damaged caused by Telkom's extreme pricing and lack of service. I still say that something drastic needs to be done. Its been ten years now!

as far as they are concerned nothing needs to be done - everything is 100%

We would love to do this but it is impossible - means we all stop working. And wish we could use someone else - but all roads lead to telkom. The line fee is the biggest joke on the planet - and we're the only ones who get it.

What difference will this make - will still be paying line rental... telkom must drop line rental immediately - but why should they - they have no mandate, no reason -. So - whoever, whichever, whatever - telkom benefits.

Agree. I still don't get why the hell this fee is in place. Dropping this fee completely and the equivalent "line rental" fee for ADSL would cause a substantial increase in the number of people who get phone lines and ADSL. It's simple, people will buy stuff if it's affordable. Right now the only people that can have ADSL are the ones in the higher income bracket.

Many times people do strange things (not illegal things) that make world headlines because it was so funny or different from the norm. Look at CNN for example. Some times they have this sort of thing about people doing the strangest things or most interesting things. Maybe something like this will make our telecomunications situation known or over the world.

That particular horse has been flogged to death.

How about MyADSL or anti-trust setting up a project wereby SA's bussiness leaders get sent information on the topic and on how a reformed telecoms sector could help them - then Antitrust/MyADSL will have the backing of big bussiness etc and would hopefully get somewere ...

flyer campaign

We could start flyer campaign, where we print out literally thousands of leaflets. Myadsl members pay some car guards to get them out on every windshield in the country.

Sad to say, but when all avenues of protest are closed, and the voice of reason is trampled upon, people historically have turned to more drastic measures.

Perhaps a sharp dose of consumer terrorism is in order. Vive le resistance!

Protests dont yeild results immidiately.. they chip away at the stone slowly... and finally it will crumble... dont give up yet ;-) This year is going to be a bad Telkom year.... just a hunch tho

I myself have had enough, I know the GubMint are to blame but I still beleive its us who have to be Telkoms watchdog since ICASA clearly dont have the teeth to. Attack them from all sides.

We need teams of people to do the following (and perhaps more). I realise that almost everyone on this site has done one of the following at some point but the effort needs to be co-ordinated and presented as a united movement, perhaps user the myadsl banner?

Debunk their media releases and release factual responsed back to the media reieterating the point

People to digest Telkom's media releases and adverts and report them to the proper authorities/bodies where necissary

People to assist with complaints regarding installations, faults, people being tricked into signing contracts or buying equipment or services from Telkom that they don't want or need, and escalate that to the relevant bodies/ authorities.

In addition we need to be able to track how many of these things we have processed, ie 600 complaints to ICASA this month, 30 to the ASA etc. We need mountains of paperwork to be hauled into Telkom, ICASA and copies perhaps to the DOC? On a monthly basis, right now we are saying everything is bad, but how much weight will this carry when backed by thousands of reports?

Just my opinion, perhaps this is already happening at some level?

Proposal

I've got a proposal. Why don't we stage a virtual protest..

we declare a date when the protest begins and construct banner ads. We then contact as many South African internet sites as possible and ask them to display the banner ads on their website during the week. We literally litter the entire South African web with banners. When the banners get clicked on, a page is shown with the facts on telkom and the current state of the telecoms industry.
we could also extend this campaign to email, with a massive chain letter.
