According to researchers at Purdue University in the US, the tiny wind engines that they are testing could be the next big thing in computing.

Whilst it is expected that the inventors will tout their invention as revolutionary, it’s called marketing, there may just be something in it.

As the processing power of computers doubles every 18 months, drum roll here for Moore’s law, so does the problem of how to keep these machines cool to enable them to do the job.

These little gadgets may just do the trick.

These little wind engines differ from conventional fans in that they shift charged particles from one end of the computer to the other.

According to the BBC report, the positively charged particles (ions) are dragged towards a negatively charged wire (cathode) using voltage which is applied to the ionic engine. This in turn forces constant air movement.

Initial tests suggest that there is a 250% improvement which according to one of the co-authors, Professor Suresh Garimella, from Purdue University, is quite unusual.

But it seems that this particular little computing breakthrough is still far from being realized as it will take another 3 years, if the testing is successful, before consumers see tiny wind engines in their computers.
