Tip: Don't buy paint at Builders

I ran into a problem with Builders with my paint mixing, and I was also looking for some paint, and they did not have what I was looking for. They also sell some paint brand(s) which paint specialists don't stock.

They are very convenient, because they have so much stuff under one roof, but rather go to paint specialists in your area.
Builders is not the right choice.

What was the paint mixing problem? Was it resolved?

What are these paint brand(s) not stocked by paint specialists?
 
Bought 140 liters of house paint at builders. Plascon Micatex. Was on special the last month. Saved R1400. Normal price is R1300.
plus you get a R400 voucher from plascon if you spend more than R1500 on their stuff.

So I am happy.

 
I'm a Contractor.
Obviously I don't buy at Builders as it is a store aimed at the DIY'er.

They stock the good brands.

They also stock some low quality crap.

Chamberlains is cheaper wrt paint.
I don't buy there either though, unless I need a specific paint my supplier doesn't stock.

Plascon have been running specials on Micatex for the past 18-24 months, and it's not restricted to Builders, Mica and Chamberlains also, and they are both cheaper than Builders.

Chamberlains actually have knowledgeable people working in their stores, far more helpful than the ones at Builders, who seem to recruit lapswaaiers from the roadside.

I ran into a problem with South Africa a few times. South Africa is not the right choice. No need to provide details or context

No. The mixing was off and I waited an hour for them to get it right. Fired Earth is the brand.

Uhm

Get Plascon Wall and All, its better, just one thing...Clean off your entire house with a high pressure sprayer, the moldy bits with bleach and some sugarsoap then spray it clean too. Then let it dry on a hot day, next day paint it with Plascon Plaster Primer, yip Prime it all, then Plascon Wall and All 2 coats.

Last time I painted my house 15 years ago, my neighbour, just painted his a 3rd time, while I merely hosed off the dirt.

Wall and All is the one to beat, but you have to prime it again first.

Especially if powdery paint before. ie take your hand and wipe the wall, if your hand is well powdery with white or so, then yip prime it.

But Priming first will double the lifespan of your paint.

I don't like textured paint, like Micatex.
They are thick.
Spread rate is therefore low.
The finish is very tougr.
Therefore attracts dirt.
Also, it is very stretchable, so you can't overcoat with a less stretchable paint.

Yes, textured paint like Micatex, Semitex, Texture Coat etc. Are great haircrack 'killers' but I prefer painting the haircrack with Fiber Seal then, as stated above, I always apply a proper Acetone based Plaster Primer.

Mixing paint is only as good as the person doing the job…doesn’t matter where they work.

I’ve had specialists **** it up just as much as the commercial options which is why I prefer to buy the direct from brand options and rather over stock so I’m know I’m good for a few years and then I’ll likely change it anyway.

I have those old pimply rough textured walls. The Micatex covers it well. I just did a walk around and checked everything every couple of days as there are tiny white spots that show up where the paint moved. So I just dab them them again.

I used 5 in 1 fire and earth as a primer. It seems ok.
