Hi guys,

So I am in the process of forming a Software Development Interest Group in my class. I have so far convinced about 5 people to join the group - 3 of us have some experience with other programming languages. I am thinking of growing the group and then dividing it into divisions - each division will handle specific tasks or activities. I been spending some time learning Java... will be starting Android in a few days time... will probably perfect my PHP and MySQL Knowlege as well.

What I want to ask from you amazing people is a couple of things:

  • What tools are available that help groups work together
  • Where else can I find small / medium projects to work on, within Port Elizabeth / East London?
  • Is it fine recruiting people who just have the desire to learn more and not just the skill they have - There is 3 of us who know something - the other members just know what the university has taught us.
  • What other pieces of advice do you have?

I have gone and spoken to a professor within my department at University, and I was delighted to know that they have a load of projects that they receive and work on, and that they will be needing some help. She asked me to do a markup of an Android screen where the user can enter patient information for a hospital.

By November this year, I am hoping the group will be big like I visioned, and hopefully, the ground work for some ideas I have will be in place :)

Thanks.

Best group collaboration software: https://trello.com/ that I know of.

Search for projects on gumtree and mybb.

Recruit people that have skill and who are willing to teach those that are still "novices".

Network with other like minded people.
