Tips on developing an Android/iPhone app which utilises bluetooth

So I'm looking into writing an android/iphone app which utilises the devices bluetooth capabilities. This is completely new to me, so has anyone had any experience doing something like this? Got any tips for me?

Its basically have to pair with an external bluetooth module, and act like a straight serial comms link. I need to send commands via a cellphone/handheld to the paired bluetooth module, and it responds to me.
