Pravin Gordhan
In these economically trying and troubled times religion is good business and just one church, Rhema Ministries, announced an income of "slightly above R100-million" for the 2008 year.
All businesses, except churches, are forced to pay tax and it is grossly unfair that religion should be subsidized by the taxpayers, many of whom are not even believers.
The constitution guarantees equal treatment for all before the law. Freedom from taxes for churches may even be unconstitutional.
I will deliver the 2011 budget on the 23rd of February. Remember to send in your tips on what you would like to see in the budget, and what you think government's spending priorities should be. Tips can be sent via Facebook, or the link to the tips on the Treasury website (www.treasury.gov.za). They can also be faxed t...o 012 315 5126. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say.
