Exactly how do you get the spring in?

A spring has 2 open ends, so split it apart and wrap it around the cord coil by coil.

What's the point of the charger + spring? Am I missing something?

The iPhone cable perishes after 18+ months.. Not sure if it's the rubber used that has this effect or if due to bending.. I suspect by design
