Okay so a friend and I were having a conversation about the effect that changing a tire size can have on your mileage.
We worked on the assumption that X number of revolutions of the drum on your wheels will result in 1km being added to your odometer. This is obviously calibrated at factory.
In order to calculate the number of revolutions needed we used a simple mathematical formula to determine the distance a car travels for 1 revolution of the drum. 1 complete revolution of the drum is 1 complete revolution of the tire. So the circumference of the tire is the distance travelled per revolution.
Divide 1000 by circumference to give you number of revolutions needed for your odometer to add 1km.
A policeman told me you can legally increase your tire size by 2 inches. So a 14 to a 16 , a 15 to a 17 and so forth. Note that my calculations involve increasing the tire size but keeping the same profile.
Using the same method work out the number of revolutions of the larger tire needed to cover the same distance (not essential but interesting to note).
Multiply the circumference of the new tire by the number of revolutions needed for 1km on the standard tires.
You will now have the distance you actually travel per 1km added on your odometer.
We found that you get around 10% extra mileage if not more per kilometre travelled. Meaning : your car adds 1km on the odometer but has actually travelled 1.1km (slightly more but I'll use a rounded figure).
Firstly .... am I correct or have I been smoking some good sheeyit?
Secondly .... Friend suggested cars automatically compensates for bigger tires ... but how would the car know that you've changed them if you don't put it in somewhere?
Thirdly ... some manufacturers give you a standard size tire on the vehicle but in the handbook it gives you multiple tire size options ... surely somebody from one of these multi billion dollar companies figured out the mileage thing assuming it's true?
