To 3D or not to 3D

Hey there

So I'm deciding on buying my first TV even though I'm 29 already lol...

Never really been into TV (aka DSTV or SABC) so it will be used in conjunction with a media center and/or DVD/Blue Ray system.

Is it worth going for the 3D option or should a normal LED be good enough?

Also, I've heard mixed reviews about Hisense. Is it good or not? I was looking at LG or Samsung, but friend told me about Hisense being quite good now and cheaper than the other 2 brands.

How much will you use the 3D functionality?
 
That's the thing...I don't think I'll use it often, really. So as I see it, 3D isn't really worth it right now?
 
If you go 3D, do it properly. Go for one that has Active 3D, like the Samsung. Yes it is more pricey, but so much better than the lame LG passive 3D.

If you can get your hands on 3D content regularly then get a 3D, if not, then don't.

Those are the 2 main considerations you have to make imo.
 
Well, this probably isn't directly relevant to you as you're looking more for movies and such, but I got a 3D 23" LG screen recently - the model is the D2342P. It's fairly low end for a 3d screen but even so I found the difference especially in gaming to be enormous. It was definitely warranted for me. When it's well implemented in a game - and for instance if you have a PS3 or you can hook it up to a gaming PC, you'll get plenty to choose from - it adds a lot of immersion. Assassin's Creed: BF is a standout for me.

If you go 3D, do it properly. Go for one that has Active 3D, like the Samsung. Yes it is more pricey, but so much better than the lame LG passive 3D.

The good thing about 3D is that in a month's time you wont be using it.
 
3D = waste of time, sales gimmick.
However, the high end sets will come with 3d as standard either way.
4k HD, now that's something worth noticing.

4k is a bit of a waste imo. 4k only useful if you either sit 1m away from your tv, or your tv is bigger than 60".

They still make TV smaller than 60"? For shame.
The only waste is that 4k content availability is slim.

Got a 3D tv about two or so year ago, it is an passive 3D LED LG tv and I am very disappointed that I went with the 3D option, now I hardly use the 3D option, even went so far as turning the 3D off in 3D enabled content. Should have just gotten a bigger tv :(

Is it because you hardly get 3D content to watch in 3D, or because passive 3D sucks balls?

ah ok. budget, yes, another consideration. I have played 1 game on my PS4 in 3D. It was a side scroller. And it was freakin awesome! Can't wait for the first FPS to come out in 3D on the PS4. Think it will be mind blowing.

I like the idea of gaming in 3D though :p hmm decisions, decisions...

3D in gaming is far more compelling than in movies. In movies it's just a visual gimmick. I like it but it's not something that aids the movie experience. In gaming it definitely does. I wish I could show you what it looks like to play AC:BF or even a 2d scroller like Rayman Origins.
 
I love 3D, I don't know whats wrong with some of the folks here... what's wrong with some extra depth?
Sure you don't use it every night on every movie, but it's nice to watch Prometheus/Hobbit/etc and other new 3D movies every now and again.

Why is active better than passive btw? I hate buying the batteries :erm:
