Hi everyone,

I need some pc (mostly gaming) purchasing advice.

So I've been a gamer for about 20 years now and recently decided I want to get back into PC gaming as I'm getting a little bored and disappointed with console gaming.

Now my question is which route should I take to get back into pcs? I know the initial investment is big because you have to buy a monitor and case and desk etc. I was considering either buying a fully built PC from a site like computersonly.co.za or perhaps buying one component per month i.e. case, motherboard, ram with my final purchase around Christmas being a graphics card considering they should be cheaper by then.

I would like to know what you guys suggest the best route is for buying a new pc and getting back into pc gaming. Go full system in one go or buy it piece by piece and improve my monthly cash flow a little?

PS. I'm looking at spending +- R 18000 as my budget.

Thanks!

Oh yes, forgot to mention. I won't be using the PC to play multiplayer games, not a big fan. Although I will have internet access (3G dongle) for services like steam.

Get it all at once.. buying it piece by piece will basically leave you with a useless PC untill the last component.

Get into online gaming... it's ridiculously fun.

For tips on what to buy check the PC build thread.

Yip, get it all at once, otherwise parts will just be sitting there useless and losing value and warranty. But buy all the components yourself, it will save you some moola. So save up each month, until you can afford the rig. Even with all peripherals, 18k is a beeeg budget. I say if you will only be gaming casually, aim for a 12k budget

I realise that it is a big budget but like i said, I need a monitor and speaker and keyboard and probably a decent desk also, so the initial investment is rather large but later on will only need to upgrade certain parts. Can't really argue with what Archer said about the components loosing warranty. Also I would like the pc to last atleast 2 years before even considering an upgrade :)

You can get a cheap desk at a swap shop, usually good prices on solid wood ones :) And a 2500k/2600k is still a very good and cheap buy then you can focus more on the 3d card eg. Gtx 670 that will surely last 2-3 years

Buy each piece and build it.It's alot better then buying a complete pc from a shop thats how I feel anyway.
Unless you don't have to time to build the pc, but seeing that your a gamer and you have time to play games am sure you can make time to build a decent system.

You can look around on pc hardware review sites to see which hardware to buy and most site has a buying guide you can follow.
You can look at tomshardware,Bit-tech those are my Fav.Or you can download the UK magizine Custom pc there buying guide in there is very good and gets updated every month unlike some web-sites.

Might want to reconsider that 3G and steam plan though.

^This. Get 1Mbps - 4Mbps + uncapped with Mweb, and start playing online. I hardly ever play games single player these days. Nothing beats the satisfaction stomping all over noobs in online games :D :D.

It is fun stomping you :D

You can prob get away with like 12k. excl desk. Use the saving to get a ADSL line. PC gaming without an ADSL line isn't all that great, even if you're not playing MP. Doesn't have to be 4mbps. 1mbps is fine.

Steam over 3G is gonna nuke your finances.

IMO. Not a good idea to buy piece by piece over a period of time. Rather put the money you intend to spend into a savings account.
Its not only about the warranty, components lose value fast.

As for the desk... i`ve designed a built a desk using 98% of a melamine sheet, with a door for the surface. I glued and stapled fake leather over the door to give it a nice finish. It has a specially designed spot where a tower fits snugly and a cabinet for a ton of dvd cases.
The desk also has ample space for a 27"screen, 19" screen, A3 printer, and speakers.
all for well under R1000 on a Saturday afternoon

I say build it, I just built mine.

I have several consoles and I must say, FPS's are waaaaaaaaay better on the PC.
